Orfail Derrick is a NG Bugbear, who is the acting First Mate aboard the Swooning Hawk. His bugbear family was killed off by adventurers years ago, and he was taken in by Pauline for menial labor. When realizing how loyal and direct Orfail was, Pauline decided to promote the man to First Mate.
He may not be the brightest aboard the ship, but Orfail is hard-working and inspiring for most of his crew. He's a capable fighter, and knows some minor magic, from his time in the forest. He often doubts the security of his position, as he thinks he's not performing well enough on the ship- But, Pauline often assures him that what he does for the crew and ship are more than enough.
Backstory
Orfail used to be a slave to a once-hero paladin that, since his adventuring days, had retired to a mansion in the far south region of Kaldreia. He was treated poorly, but, in present, holds no ill will to the man who once owned him as a slave- After all, he was once a good man. After completing some mercenary work for the retired adventurer, Pauline Derrick had noticed the state of the man's "Staff," and began to note that the bugbear had heart and strength.
Pauline decided that loyalty to a contractor was not worth someone else's freedom, and worked to free Orfail with a combination of roguish wit, deceit, and stealth. Stealing a portion of the ex-hero's vault of treasures to keep themselves afloat for a time, and moreover, a ship of the ex-adventurer's to keep them afloat at sea for a much longer time, Pauline and Orfail began their careers as pirates.
