Personality
With a temper as short as she was, not a day would go by without Chel having some sort of confrontation. Cut in line for ice-cream? You might find a cold cone of chocolate somehow atop your head. Try to skimp on change for a pair of shoes? Good luck finding the left one of every pair. Make a snide remark at height, age, or weight? Oh, get ready for some kind of walloping. Though Chel's anger was somewhat justified in most cases, the lengths she'd go to in retaliation would range from excessive to extreme; in every instance, it wasn't a matter of "why," only "how."
But Chel's conflicts weren't all reactive. For as hyper-aware as she was to actions against her, she was ironically one for acting entirely out of malice, doing near anything and everything without a good reason. Whether it was conning the citizens of Yilva City out of their money in games via stacked odds or outright cheating, sneaking into and out of establishments without paying, or anything within the wide spectrum of small crimes, Chel was not one who thought much of morality when it wasn't in her favor. Yet she wasn't ignorant to her misdeeds, stating that "stupid is as stupid gets."
"'Justice?' That's just something losers whine about 'cause they're bad! And only losers get mad! Get mad-get mad-GET MAD, IDIOT!"
The girl stared at Sven as if he just said the nastiest thing in the world. He looked around, to no avail, as nobody else seemed to see what he was seeing. "Uhhhh... Everything okay, short stuff?"
Chel narrowed her eyes, so tightly they became two black slits in her face. Her frown was something fierce and threatened to burn a hole through the gunslinger. But at last, she held out her hand as if expecting something. "One dollar," was all she said in that little squeak she called a voice.
"A dollar?"
"What're you, stupid?! Gimme a dollar or I'm telling my ma on you!"
"Wha—You know how much a dollar is!? You're out of your dang mind! Don't you think you can get all snippy and scammy with me, you tiny little—"
"I'M NOT LITTLE!" Chel screamed as she threw a punch. It was just fast enough, just big enough, and in just the right spot to send any grown man to the floor.
Sven didn't know how he managed to hand over a dollar, what with the pain in the Little General, but he made a mental note to never listen to Heavy about any kids again.
Yet Chel's penchant for lashing out at the wider world was a shield of her own making. Whether or not she was aware of it, and despite her sisters' insistence, her diminutive stature and homely features gave her a deep feeling of both division and inferiority.
At ten years old, Chel longed to venture forth in the world beyond Yilva City and Aelayeron as a whole. Though she'd say it was due to growing up in but the smallest of small corners, paying only fleeting visits to the city below the High Wall, she secretly harbored the wish of finding anyone like her, tentacles and all.
History & Notable Relationships
By 1865, Chel would be witness to some of the most important events in not only Aelayeron's history, but Ikwento as a whole.
Early Life
Prior to the birth of Izzy, Chel, and Maya, their mother Suitalk would suffer years of melancholy following
her last child's departure. This was uncharacteristic of the All-Mother who had previously accepted her childrens' inability to stay with her, believing she'd prepared each of them as best she could for life below the High Wall. At some point during this depression, Suitalk would find a strange egg-like object left within her estate. Unsure of what else to do, the All-Mother took it to bathe, cleaning it until a click alerted her. The top of the egg split apart to reveal a sleeping creature which looked like a cross between a baby and an octopus. Turning to reach for a basin so as to carry her new arrival, Suitalk was greeted by the sight of two sleeping infants clutching one-another.
"It is a sign, mine love. From the moment you came into mine life, sheltered within your egg, you were unlike any child in all the world. And every day I may gaze upon you, I am reminded as to the extent of that fact."
— Suitalk
Much of Chel's early childhood consisted of time spent with her sisters and their mother. As they grew older, visits from their pediatrician and extended family such as
Princess Telili helped to acclimate them for their eventual trips to the High Wall outside of Suitalk's estate. This in turn would eventually lead to trips to the city below, albeit with close supervision by members of either the church or government. Whether or not they realized it, Izzy, Chel, and Maya were never truly beyond the notice of the powers which protected them.
Almost Like Love
The year of 1865 saw the infamous
High Voltage Varrick attempting to assassinate Chel's mother for reasons unknown. Although most would say it was mere coincidence, Chel would swear as to somehow
feeling the outlaw whenever he'd approach. Though some would say her not being worried at the idea of a person actively seeking the murder of her mother as apathetic or even heartless, Chel knew better than to think a crazed gunman (however fast) would be able to do anything against the strongest woman in the world.
Chel would play a small role during the events of "Almost Like Love," frequently seen with her sisters and their mother. The steel man
Heavy would note her resemblance to her
aunt, much to Suitalk's disapproval.
Notable Relationships
Suitalk: The All-Mother knew of Chel as her unruliest child by virtue of both spirit and ability. Never had one so rebellious been under her roof, treating every limitation as a goal; the act of forbidding something instead turning it into a compulsion. While discipline with Chel came hard and fierce, it also took a toll on Suitalk, driving a wedge into her heart. She'd often wonder how her smallest and strangest daughter felt toward her, shuddering at the darkest answers.
"Chichi? Are... Perhaps it... (inhales) Do you... feel... unloved, mine darling?"
— Suitalk, one bittersweet night
Isabelle: Izzy thought of her sister as the smartest girl in the world. Chel would start every day knowing full-well what she'd do, and most times just how to do it before breakfast. Not to mention, she had an answer for every question a noggin could hold.
Chel thought it was easy to be around Izzy, however annoying she might be. Izzy never judged her. Izzy never lied to her. And why would her sister do any of that? Life was easy when you were all sunshine and rainbows and held everyone's love.
"Sissy, you're so smart. When I'm your age, I hope to be a'smart like you, uh-huh!"
— Izzy, witnessing Chel start a fire using shoelaces
Maya: She was everything her sister wasn't, and boy-howdy did the two show it. Putting Maya and Chel together was like leaving a candle in an oil refinery: you could leave it unlit, but just having it there was asking for trouble. One hated being bugged, the other couldn't help but to bug.
Yet despite it all, Chel knew Maya didn't give her nothing she didn't deserve, and nothing as bad as it could've been. Besides, Maya was a bit of a baby, who knows what'd happen if her sister wasn't looking out for her?
"Ugh, fine. You can come along. SHUT UP! I'M NOT HAPPY; YOU SMELL BAD!"
And when the two
would get along enough to work together, heaven forbid they include their third sister, the results were never less than hectic. (If one was to chart out the calls-per-hour to the Yilva City Police Department and compare that to the days Chel, Maya, and Izzy were left behind as their mother did out-of-city work...)
Abilities
It was a day early on in the life of her daughter where Suitalk noticed something quite peculiar; something so small yet unmistakable, a fact which refused ignorance. Where Isabelle and Maya had their shadows face away from the sun, Chel's instead stuck out in spite of it, existing as a silhouette in the light.
Over time, this being would reveal itself as something otherworldly, bizarre, and with a mind of its own.
By ten years old, Chel was able to somewhat control the creature which existed both as and in the place of her shadow: an unusual creature by the moniker of "Twi'Tone," as she'd call it in their infancy. Whether acting as a physical and amorphous mass, engulfing anything and everything, to outright disappearing into it and traversing the world as a suggestion of black, the creature's abilities gave Chel no shortage as to methods with which to cause chaos.
Twi'Tone: Chel's shadow held a mind to itself, often taking the appearance of an ever-shifting mass of darkness; broken up only by the pure white circles of its eyes and the occasional jagged mouth. When inactive, it'd behave and look like any normal shadow, but outright disappear when frightened or unwell, the latter being tied to Chel's state of being.
When in use, Twi'Tone could push, pull, and hit things with a force similar to its user. Though, Chel would state she'd been training it in matters of strength and precision.
The Twilight Tone: A quirk of Twi'Tone was how, though it possessed a voice similar to its owner (albeit heavily distorted), it could only speak in onomatopoeias. One specific noise it'd make would be its "twilight tone," in which a quick fluttering of notes signaled that it and Chel were either leaving or entering their state of intangibility.
The Twilight Zone: Perhaps Chel's most useful power, this allowed her to physically enter her own shadow and move without adhering to the logic of the natural world. As a silhouette, Chel could be seen "running" up the side of a wall or "swimming" along the floor. When held, Twi'Tone seemed to exude the energy of this space parallel to reality, prolonged exposure leading to the loss of feeling within the body.
"No! Naughty-naughty voidling; release mine Chichi from your obfuscation!"
— Suitalk
Aa absolutely love her. Had a constant smile as I read the article. Her personality is so distinct and memorable. Twi'Tone talking in onomatopoeia is a lovely touch. "Besides, Maya was a bit of a baby, who knows what'd happen if her sister wasn't looking out for her? " Makes me worried. P.S. RIP Lil General, turned into kogel mogel
Thank you as always, Nincho~ I'm glad you enjoy these three as much as you have. They're my oldest still-used characters and favorites of mine. And you don't gotta worry about Chel's comment; she's just being tsun-tsun for liking her sister, haha.
