Daeva Silvetti: The Woman Without Words

They seemed to be enjoying one-another's company: the woman playing a cheery, sweet tune with her keyboard and the girl singing along in a bumping gibbersish. While the child's melody bounced in a similar fashion to the notes of the instrument, the woman's vocals were long and flowing; altogether the noise reminded Rusiko of a Winter's walk, the breeze dancing around playfully. In spite of herself, she bobbed her head to the rhythym.   After a few minutes, the pair concluded their performance and the girl gathered her things in a hurry. "Oh! I'll be late," she said, trotting along before abruptly turning back. "Ma'am?"   With those words, the woman tilted her head quizzically.   "I had fun a lot; thank you very much," the girl said with a beaming grin. After giving a polite bow, she darted around the corner and presumably off home.
A minor deity of Aelayeron, Daeva Silvetti was considered the Divine Advocate of Interconnection: representing the love everyone should have for their fellow Man. However, scarcely anyone knew of the "Woman Without Words" beyond this fact. (This article contains major spoilers for Almost Like Love)

APPEARANCE

Daeva Silvetti Card.png
Calenvo's elder daughter was arguably the most human, in terms of visual appearance, among the Divinity. Whereas her sister Suitalk towered above mortals, Daeva could easily hide behind a grown man. While her cousin Telili boasted oscillating spots along her skin, Daeva had a plain, if pale, complexion. As her family was glamorous, Daeva was unassuming; for all the gifts bestowed upon her, she took great efforts to conceal them.   Daeva walked amongst the world of Men anonymously; dressing in plain clothing comprised primarily of a single-breasted coat accompanied by boot-cut trousers. Additionally, she'd wrap herself in a white cape. From within the garment Daeva would produce any number of items such as gift boxes, containers of foodstuffs, or musical instruments.   Her most prominent features came in her physique: eyes with black sclera and inhuman pupils as well as her snowy hair streaked with bands of black. Depending on the season or mood, Daeva was known to style her hair in any number of ways. Above even that, however, the Woman Without Words had a mouth which opened to unsettling lengths: the corners stretching to nearly touch her ears. As her sister Suitalk, among others, attested, this was an injury unintentionally caused by their father.

PERSONALITY

To those she met during her travels, Daeva seemed like a rather nice, if strange woman. Even without the ability to speak, her musical talents along with her demeanor eased a lot of people in spite of meeting her in secluded places such as lonely roads beyond town or vacant lots. For most encounters, Daeva would enjoy a bit of time with a human, having them join in her improvised songs or offering them small things such as bits of candy. To those who understood ASL, Daeva would state how she simply wanted company. And for most, this was very much true as they'd leave with little more than a story of the chance encounter. To all others, Daeva's mutterings and melodic vocalizations were enough to charm or at the very least convey her as not an inherent threat.   For a few unfortunate individuals, this simply wasn't the case.
He pressed himself against the wall, shivering.   "Mimi~ Mimi~" called a voice out the window.

HISTORY & NOTABLE RELATIONSHIPS

Daeva was said to enjoy her first years of existence as she had been born from the combined thoughts of her father and mother, appearing from the very start as a child of around three to five years in age. From written and first-hand accounts by those living or visiting The Grand Archives of Secolios, Daeva was doted on by her parents and behaved as any child would, divine or otherwise. The girl was said to love her parents very much and in particular would often be found around her mother.   Some years later, Suitalk would later be conceived. Unlike her elder sister, The All-Mother was born much less developed: appearing closer to an infant at six or eight months of age, albeit larger and with much more hair. And unlike their mother, the sisters aged at a near-unnoticeable rate, appearing to have gotten only a few years older by the time she had passed due to natural causes.   Whilst mourning his wife, running Secolios, and attempting to raise his children, Calenvo evidently was unable to meet with the unique needs his eldest daughter presented. Her inability to come to terms with both her mother's absence and the greater attention she perceived her younger sister to have held, Daeva had gained a temper over the years. Her tantrums would one day cause her to become violent towards Suitalk, causing their father to intervene; Calenvo looked in horror at what his power and unchecked anger had done.
"...and she stood there, clutching her mouth in tears; veins spreading across her forehead and eyes wide in hate. Her lower jaw hung from her skull, torn and bleeding greatly. Master Calenvo reached out, but she refused: shrieking into a burst of light.   We searched for years, without success. I don't think Master Calenvo ever knew what happened to her."
Heavy
Daeva would disappear, her father never seeing her for the rest of his life. After his passing, she would reveal herself to the rest of her family as well as those at the top of The Asporaso Faith during Aelayeron's rebuilding following the 1500 War of Roses. Since then, she traveled Aelayeron at her leisure, occaisionally visiting members of her family.

Notable Relationships

Calenvo: Daeva was witnessed visiting the site of her father's death once, but promptly vanished upon being seen. Otherwise, she seemed to harbor a grudge against the Major Deity after damaging her mouth and robbing her of the ability to speak normally.   Suitalk: The daughters of Calenvo weren't known to be on good terms. Although she rarely did so, when Daeva would visit her sister the pair would usually come to blows. It should also be noted that unlike most people, Suitalk seemed to understand her sister's mumbles as genuine speech.   The Asporaso Faith: Daeva didn't help her family nor the Humans of Aelayeron govern the nation, but she did take the treatment of the few shrines devoted to her very personally. Families who maintained the upkeep of these sites often held members who were born without the ability to cast shadows.

ABILITIES & EQUIPMENT

As were the rest of Aelayeron's minor deities, Daeva held an indefinite lifespan, superhuman physicality, and an innate magical affinity which likely manifested as a few abilities unique to her.   Vocal Insight: Upon prolonged conversation with her, a person would find their inner feelings and secrets divulged to Daeva. The sorts of things she'd learn ranged from simple preferences in regards to sweets to sources of dark guilt. What she did with such information was largely kept to herself; many theorized she simply enjoyed knowing things about someone. Whether this ability extended to other divine beings has yet to be confirmed.   Musical Ear: Daeva's centuries of practice with every instrument known to Man gave her the skill to play without the need for sheet music, sometimes being able to replicate a melody seconds after hearing it. (As an additional note, her favorite instrument was said to be the orphica)   Sense of Self: If someone nearby was directly thinking of her, Daeva would be aware of it. Additionally, if someone directed any sort of perceptive or communcative spells at her, she'd know and would usually shut the user out, along with delivering severe psychic damage.

Forked Halo

Whereas other members of the Aelish Divinity visibly brandished their halos, Daeva's was rarely seen as it lay within her mouth. Appearing as a golden bident, anything pierced by it would in-moments deteriorate into an unrecognizable mass. Whether it always had this quality or if gained it at some point isn't known. However, it should be noted that Daeva did not use her halo in combat, as her natural strength was more than a match for any foe.
Her grip was iron, unbreakable, and growing tighter by the second. The woman's eyes watered and she curled her lips inward. "Mimi," she said, sadly.   The warrior raised their dagger and brought it down at the pale woman's face. To their horror, she opened her mouth with a shriek. A glowing void had replaced flesh and the dagger shattered upon contact, the shards dissapearing as cinders in the air.   There was a crunch and the warrior went limp.

Author's Notes

Hey y'all. I'm back to making articles, hopefully. While we wait for [Almost Like Love] to be finished, here's an article about one of the worst things in Aelayeron. And for those wondering, my favorite song on the album is "Summer Rain" tied with "Steps in the Snow."   Anyhow, that's all from me. As always, thank you so very much for tuning in and I hope you like my work or at the very least found some cool music from it.   — Awsm Chimera (Ryan)

Oooh, this article kept me hooked! What an interesting yet somewhat unnerving character! I'm curious about Aelish Sign Language, and curious to see Daeva's intentions for the future. Daeva's abilities are also intriguing too - they seem very useful!

Thank you so much, Ocelot; I'm glad you found Daeva worth a read. ASL isn't all too different from most real-world forms of Sign Language such as ESL, but something you might find neat is that humanoid Gestalts (Magic Robots) were the ones to form it due to originally being made unable to speak. As for Daeva's unique abilities, I'd wager they're a large part of both her elusive nature along with being able to get so close to Humans.

The little stories of meeting mortals are a nice touch!

Read the great stories submitted for the Worldember Prose Prompt.

Thank you big, George; I'm glad my attempts at prose were found as complementary to the article.   Also, fun fact: "Holy/Healing magic" in Ikwento is actually the manipulation of time, which is probably why Daeva's halo has the specific property of destroying anything on contact. (Stuff like this isn't ever addressed in-universe which is why I like sharing it)

I've already said this I'm sure , but I love what you've done with Daeva upon bringing her to Ikwento. Her four different appearances are awesome and I like that way you have them all laid out here. Also, I never realized until now that Daeva (and Suitalk?) are half-mortal. All the prose sections throughout this article are also really great, I especially like the third one. Can't wait to see more!

Ah, thank you so much, Puffin; I'm glad you found Daeva's current art and the prose likeable.   And yes, Daeva & Suitalk are technically half-mortal, but only in the sense that their mother's thoughts helped shape them at birth; otherwise they're just as magical as the other minor deities.
