Varisia; Avháara's home country

Show spoiler
The young elf was born in the lands known as Varisia, Dotted with the monolithic relics of an empire long since crumbled, Varisia is a rough but majestic land, its misty forests and rolling plains bordered by sharp peaks and bountiful seas. Its people, recently released from colonialism, are hardy frontier folk and newmoney nobles, all eager to carve names for themselves from Varisia’s stern landscape. Yet beyond their village borders, beasts and giants unused to civilization’s encroachment stalk the hills and woods, making short work of both the unwary and the bold. Avhaara has mostly spent her time with her fellow Elves in Mierani Forest and has not seen much of the rest of the land. She did hear things about the rest of Varisia from the other people in the village. She knows that there are three big human cities to the south and south east;
-Magnimar, known for it’s monuments.
-Korvosa, an Ancient city far to the south east.
-Riddleport, a lawless city full of pirates and criminals. Riddleport is only a few days ride away from her village.

Outside of the elven forest the land is inhabited mainly by various groups of humans.
  • Varisians are a primarily nomadic human ethnic group known to favor the open road over permanent settlements. They travel in caravans. (They are basically gypsies).
  • Shoanti are an often nomadic people who live in the harsh lands in the east. They often live in barbaric tribes and don’t encounter civilization
  • Chelaxians come from the distant land of Cheliax. The people of Cheliax came to Varisia a little more than 300 years ago and founded the cities of Korvosa and Magnimar. It is said that in their home country Chelaxians worship literal devils.
  • There is also one city where a high population of Dwarves live. The name of this city is Janderhoff.

Mierani Forest; Where Avhaára grew up

    Show spoiler
The regional home of the Elves since time immemorial, the Mierani Forest is a place of enormous, spreading trees and abundant wildlife. The Mierani elves maintain the forest as a civilized wilderness, allowing the course of nature to run unimpeded and protecting it from monstrous threats and axe-wielding interlopers. While small elven communities guard the wooded fringe and wandering feral-born patrol the depths, the elves are still in the process of cleansing the forest after their centurieslong absence, their most persistent quarries being tribes of ettercaps, ravenous plants, and a singularly elusive green dragon known as Razorhorn. Deep in the Mierani Forest, the ancient elven capital of Celwynvian stands empty, its verdant palaces and delicate towers poised breathlessly in the half-light beneath the canopy. Avoided superstitiously by other races during the elves’ long absence, the City of Emerald Rains has been quarantined since their return. Refusing all requests by outsiders to enter their ancestral home, the elves claim to have cut off the city to provide their kind with a refuge from the outside world. Those who deal with the denizens of the Mierani Forest, however, whisper that the elves themselves actually reside outside the city, fighting a hidden war to retake their capital from a sinister and unnamed force. Avháara knows that these rumors are true, as she grew up in Crying Leaf, one of those villages outside of the Mierani forest. During that long period when elves left the world the old capital of Celwynvian has been invaded and occupied by the Drow, dark elves from deep underground. And every since the elves return they have fought a desperate war to reclaim it.

    Crying Leaf; Avhaára's hometown

    Show spoiler
Crying Leaf, from without and within, is a community on the edge of conflict. Just 1 day to the west lie the ruins of Celwynvian, the site of a near constant skirmish with the drow who have taken over the old elven capital deep within the forest. As such, the elves use Crying Leaf as a staging ground, a safe haven where weary combatants can get a measure of rest and resupply. Although the Drow have long known of Crying Leaf ’s location, the distance from the drow holdings in Celwynvian has traditionally kept the village safe.   This community has little contact with the outside world. While the occasional merchant caravan travels to Riddleport for supplies, the community is primarily provisioned and reinforced directly from Kyonin, the elven nation far to the east, through the use of teleport and similar magic. While many of the elves are interested in the arrival of outlanders since they have seen so few of them in the past couple of years, others are skeptical, believing that they are not needed to solve what is seen as an “elven problem.”   The village consists mainly of simple, low stone and wooden structures, decorated with graceful carvings. About 720 elves and around 60 half elves call it home. It is protected by a wall of thorns that encircles the village completely. This barrier can only be opened with special whistles carried by the scouts and guardians of the village.   Where other villages and cities are often created with the purpose of commerce, agriculture or trade Cyring Leaf is different. It is a military town where life revolves around the war to retake the old capital. Most of the inhabitants spend their time training for war and preparing for their endless missions deep into the forest. Although both sides in the conflict try to wage a longlasting war it is often that some of the soldiers don’t return. A lot of the soldiers and other inhabitants have the same story. They were born and raised elsewhere in the world but travelled to Crying Leaf to help the war effort. The town does not support a lot of children and Avh’aara is one of the few elves to have been actually born and raised here.   As an entirely elven town, Crying Leaf has a number of oddities that are strange for the rare human visitor. There are no beds in Crying Leaf, since the elves do not sleep. There are simple reed mats in nearly every home to facilitate their daily meditations. Most of the elves here are vegetarians—meat is never served. Similarly, ale and beer are not readily available. The elves tend to drink water or wine with all of their meals. Crying Leaf has little in the way of amenities for visitors. There are no taverns, inns, or stores in the community. All of the food and supplies are rationed by Eviana and her men.   While not everyone in Crying Leaf is a soldier, everyone is in one way or another involved in conflict. Smiths provide repairs for weapons and armors, bowyers and fletchers produce a steady stream of expert elven arrows and bows, cooks prepare food rations for the scouts and patrols and of course the town needs a great deal of healers and priest to attend the wounded and lay the fallen soldiers to rest.   As expected Crying Leaf has seen its share of sorrows and problems. Groups of scouts and soldiers go deep into Mierani forest for weeks on end and casualties do occur. The Drow know where Crying Leaf is but because they can’t travel a lot in the sun attacks on Crying Leaf are rare, happening only once every 10 or 20 year. Unfortunately, around 10 years ago the previous leader of Crying Leaf was assassinated. The elven kingdom Kyonin has sent a new leader to the village, a sorceress named Eviana Nirgassan . She now rules over the village and directs the war effort. Most of the soldiers serve Eviana directly, however there is a separate group in Crying Leaf. They are called the “Lantern Bearers” (The Shin’Rakorath). They are led by a stern and strict scout named Kaerishiel Neirenar. (Let’s just call him Kaer), Kaer patrols the forest with a Fire Pelt Cougar called Ashka.

    Avhaára's backstory

    Show spoiler
Because Elves don’t give birth very often, everyone in the village was really excited when Avháara was born. Normally Crying Leaf is a serious place but for the birth of a young elf, a weeklong celebration was held. Unfortunately, perhaps due to Avháara’s strange bloodline her mother, Apsaára died only two months after. Your memories as a young child are vague but you remember that there were happy memories. Even without your mother present. This all changed one night when the young elfling was only 11 years old. Alvhaara has never learned what exactly happened during that fateful night. All she knows is that she did.. Something. And that there was a fire. No one in the village has ever told her what exactly happened that night but the villagers consider that night as a disaster. From this moment on the young elf knew she was a sorcerer and that something in her blood that makes her capable of casting spells with ease. She can grow claws that drip with poison, summon a shield to protect her out of nowhere, and with some focus, she can make sure that she never misses any strikes. After that night you and your father, Ariaánd had to move to the edge of the village, close to the barracks where most of the soldiers are. It was only a few years later when disaster struck again. The hated enemy, the Drow elves with whom the village is at war, snuck into Crying Leaf and kidnapped Alvhaára. The young girl was retrieved by her father but he had to pay with his life for it. For the remainder of her youth, Alvhaára stayed with her adoptive parents, Zyriël and Gámedra who did their best to take care of the troubled child. Ariaánd has left a letter for his daughter but she does not know this yet.     Over the years the villagers started to avoid Avháara and your family. However, she always felt the eyes of the soldiers on her. The sorceress was forbidden to leave the village and was continuously told to never use her magic by the leaders of the village. Avhaára is definitely not the only magically capable person in Crying Leaf but for some reason, no one wants to help her develop her magical talents. Eviana Nirgassan, the leader of the village is a sorceress herself but she refuses to teach The leader always says that it will come when Avhaára is older and that patience is the strength of the elf. Despite this Avhaára sees elves of her age being trained for war and Avhaára feels she is constantly being lied to. This has been going on for at least 10 years.   The years and experience have left Alvhaára introverted and given her a rebellious streak. She is curious and when she can she reads about the outside world where she aims to escape. She doesn’t care about the lost elven glory of Celwynvian but she does wish to become powerful enough to end the constant war in the Mierani Forest. She knows she will never develop her magic in Crying Leaf so she eagerly looks to escape into the world in search of power and riches. Alvhaára gravitates to people who are careful and reserved, just as she is, and can’t stand people who talk too much. It is no surprise that she befriended Astron, a raven. Alvhaára sports black hair in a long braid. As is custom to elves on Golarion her eyes are jet-black and her physiology has adapted to her environment. Her hands and upper forearms are naturally tinted green and her fingers end in long nails. She prefers to wear black clothing and is often seen wearing a green cape that is indistinguishable from moss.

Prologue: A tear for Crying Leaf

    Show spoiler
Avhaara wakes up and gets ready for her day. She knows that yesterday a unit of soldiers left the village of Crying Leaf, her adoptive father included, that means that today a previous unit of soldiers will return. It has been a rainy night and even now it still drizzles.   The people in the village eat in a big communal hall in the middle of town next to the teleportation square. Food is already prepared, today on the menu is Glazed, wild carrots The carrots were a surprise—beautiful for their variety of oranges, purples, and yellows, yet unassuming. The caramelized butter and honey glaze was balanced by a punch of chili salt, fen pepper, lemon, and thyme, which cleansed the palate.   Most people avoid her but there is one young elf, Santrel , slightly younger than Alvháara that is joining her at her table. He came through the portal from Kyonin a couple of weeks ago and is still in training. The young elf has not seen any combat yet. He is boasting about how good he is getting and wants to show his great skill at archery. Because of his arrogance she scoffs at Santrel. Avhaára finishes her food in silence and quickly leaves.   As the magic whistle is sounded three times a visitor enters the village. It’s the elven ranger Shalelu. Avhaára knows that Shalelu was born and raised in Crying Leaf but after tragedy struck with her parents she took to the wider world and made her own life away from the village. The two have had pleasant conversations in the past, seeing each other as kindred spirits.   Shalelu explains that she is here on urgent business. Various goblin tribes in Varisia are acting strangely. More organized. She came to check the goblin population in Mierani Forest, maybe the Drow are organising the green pests? Shalelu needs to speak to the leadership of the village but promises Avhaára that they will catch up later.   Later in the morning, the unit of soldiers return. As is normal in Crying Leaf they use their magic whistle 3 times to open the wall of thorns and allow them entry. A couple of hours before returning home they were ambushed by Drow in a chaotic attack during the rain. Out of the twelve that left a week ago only eleven return. The commander of the unit goes to the storage hall to get a bottle of elven absinthe to deliver to the widow of the diseased soldier. The soldiers are all battered, bruised and dirty. Seven of them are wounded and need to to go the healers' hall.   Avhaara is there with the other medics to treat the wounded. Avhaara finds the poisoned dart and realizes that poison is at work, she deftly reduces the effect of the poison. She tries to help the other wounded too. This is the one place in the village where Avhaára feels appreciated. While administrating medicine she notices that one of the soldiers, strangely enough, the one covered in the most blood, is trying to get away from the healers' hall. He successfully sneaks off in the commotion. After the most intensive aid to the wounded soldiers has been provided she follows him.   Avhaára loses track of the stranger but manages to follow his bloody tracks to an outhouse at the edge of the village. She confronts the stranger through the door, demanding to know who he is. As he doesn’t answer the sorceress grows her claws and tries to break through the door. The man inside is faster and opens the door. Avhaára sees that it's actually a Drow spy disguised as a wounded soldier. The drow manages manages to hit her with a poisoned crossbow bolt. Biting through the poison Avhaára unleashes her Turturous Torment spell, twisting the drow’s insides. He tries to flee but his flight is cut short by a slashing gust spell. He topples to the floor, bleeding out from various cuts. Avhaára, unsure of what to do, tries her best to heal the infiltrator. She is hindered by the poison in her system and is too late to save him. She is unable to hide the body and before long she is found by Kaerishiel and a group of soldiers. Avhaára does her best to explain herself but it’s no use. The military leader has had it out for her for a long time. The soldiers take the corpse and leave Avhaára to her wounds. Some of the elven soldiers look unsure about how just the situation is.   Bitter and angry about how she is treated Avhaára devices a plan to escape. She goes to Santrel at the training fields and apologizes to him for how she treated the young elf before. She requests his aid in finding one of the whistles that can be used to open the wall of thorns. He reluctantly agrees, even if only to show off his skills.   She quickly goes to her house to get her belongings. On the way Shalelu finds her. The ranger explains that she is standing behind Avhaára's decision to leave. Shalelu herself can't leave now but she gives the young elf a map of Varisia and says that she will meet her in the city of Riddleport in seven days time.   When Avhaára finally gets home and packs her things her adoptive mother confronts her. She is in tears about what happened but while she isn't happy that her daughter is leaving she understands that there is no other choice but to let Avhaára go. Gámedra promises her adoptive daughter that she will do everything she can to ensure that Crying Leaf remains a home where Avhaára can come home to. But she acknowledges that it will be some time before Kaerishiel calms down.   Making her way to the edge of the village, Avhaára narrowly avoids squadrons of soldiers who by now are looking for her. She barely manages to meet with Santrel without getting caught. The young elf warrior-to-be has decided to demand payment for his services and Avhaára has no choice but to part with some of her gold. When the coast is clear she blows the magic whistle three times and sprints through the opening in the wall of thorns. While running from her would be captors Avhaára has finally left home.

    Session 1

[spoiler]“Avhaara finds herself at night running through the forest. The events from today are racing through her mind. Santrel , the young elven boy that she rejected in the morning. The return of the soldiers whom she had healed. And the blood on her hands after Avhaara had killed the dark elf spy. She also remembers that instead of gratitude she received threats of punishment for her actions. Images flash through her mind, Asking Santrel’s help in stealing the magic whistle, the short goodbye with her step mother. That was mere hours ago. As she now dashes through the trees she thinks about the elf woman Shalelu, who gave the escapee the map of the land and a promise to visit Avhaara in the city of Riddleport in 7 days. Astron , Avhaara's raven companion, caws from behind her; a warning that she is still being followed by soldiers in the distance.   The cawing of Astron nerves Avhaara . She calls for the raven to fly closer lest it becomes a beacon for her pursuers. The elf notices herself tiring and decides to hide. She spots a large fallen tree overgrown with moss. She hides there, her mosslike cloak blending her into the environment. Somewhere within eyesight, a small spider has started to build a web. Avhaara uses this to track the time, when the web is about a third finished she dares to leave her hiding space.   This late at night hunger, thirst and exhaustion starts to set in. It is difficult for the Avhaara o navigate as the forest's canopy blocks out most of the moonlight that the young elf needs to see.   As Avhaara tries to settle in for sleep she realizes that this must be the first time in over a decade where she does not sleep in her own bed. The elf has always felt alone but now she truly is. She ponders her future, she has finally escaped home but what comes after? Avhaara feels that she should put her trust in Shalelu but the only fact is that she cannot go home after this. The thoughts are so intrusive that they keep the sorceress awake. She lights a torch and decides to brave the dark forest to find water.   The torchlight makes it easier to see in the forest but it also makes one easier seen. Before long a large shape descents on Avhaara from the canopy. Fangs from a giant spider sink into Avhaara's lower neck and she struggles to get away from the monstrosity, bleeding. Almost upon instinct, the sorceress calls upon the power in her blood to elongate her fingers into large, poison dripping, claws. As a side-effect of the spell, the skin on her forearms grows scales. Avhaara tries to leap on the creature to rend it to pieces but its eight legs scurry it away too fast. As Avhaara lands next to the spider she waves her arm upwards to summon a magical shield. It materializes just in time to block the incoming attacks from the monster. After a few pounces the shield shatters and disappears but Avhaara has her second spell ready. She squeezes her outstretched hand into a fist as if squeezing the spiders internal organs. The elf is not well acquainted with spider anatomy but the spider none the less crumples up in agony. Not wanting to waste her opportunity she goes in for another strike at the creature but she only manages to scratch the exoskeleton. The giant spider fight or flight response kicks in and it attacks with abandon. With no shield to protect her the spiders fangs once again dig deeper in the flesh. This time, long enough to inject its menacing venom. Avhaara can almost immediately feel herself grow weak. She stumbles to get away, to create any distance between herself and the giant spider. As Avhaara runs she musters all her effort in her next spell. With a sharp cut she waves her hand at the spider pursuing her, the cut through the air launces sharp gusts of winds which slash through the softer parts of the spiders body. The creature bleeds heavily as it takes a three slow steps towards Avhaara. Before it can reach her the giant spider curls up, defeated. With trembling hands Avhaara grabs a healing potion out of her backpack and drinks it just in time so she doesn't pass out. She takes a couple of moments to breath and catch her bearings before walking over to the spider's carcass. All of her anger and frustrations overtake her as she starts viciously clawing at the dead creature, rending it to shreds.   Still worn out from the fight and troubles of the day Avhaara continues her search for water. To her luck she finds a little small stream of fresh water. The young elf finally quenches her thirst and fills her waterskin. She then finally succumbs to sleep. Upon waking she wanders through the forest, at first she finds it difficult to find her way. It takes a couple of hours before she reaches the treeline at Mierani Forest 's edge. She is greeted by the hilly landscape of the Velashu Uplands. Before long she finds a path that the rare travelers that enter the Mierani forest use and she is pretty confident that following it will lead her to her destination of Riddleport . Avhaara can't deny that she is starting to miss her adopted family and hopes that finding Shalelu will give her guidance and direction in her new life. (50:37)
