Father Abstalar Zantus
Father
Abstalar Zantus stepped into the spiritual void left after the tragic death of Father Ezakien Tobyn in the Cathedral fire five years ago. Though younger and more open-minded than his predecessor, Zantus has become a source of steady comfort and moral guidance for the people of Sandpoint. His personality is marked by warmth, humility, and a profound sense of compassion.
Unlike Tobyn, Zantus is not rigid in his worship of Desna. He is inclusive of all good-aligned faiths in Sandpoint, often acting as a spiritual liaison between worshippers of different deities. His open heart has made him beloved by many—though, until recently, the townspeople still felt the loss of Tobyn deeply.
On the 23rd of Rova, Father Zantus presided over the consecration ceremony of the new Sandpoint Cathedral, his voice a beacon of hope:
“This story reminds us that tragedy is just a setback, not an end...”
However, joy turned to terror when goblins attacked during the festival. Despite the chaos, Zantus remained calm and present, healing the wounded, supporting the townspeople, and even joining the effort to repel the invaders. He especially aided Pious, a young cleric of Sarenrae, recognizing the bond between their two faiths:
“Desna and Sarenrae are allies... she did not slay Rovagug alone.”
His healing magic not only closed wounds but restored singed hair and burned skin—his divine touch a miracle in the moment.
That night, Zantus completed the consecration ceremony of the new cathedral—though behind closed doors and in solemn tones rather than celebration. Pious and Rabie were invited to take part in the rites, where Pious even subtly shifted the liturgy, blending a melodic chant from her Sarenite upbringing. Zantus accepted this warmly, further evidence of his inclusive spirit.
On the 24th of Rova, Zantus made a disturbing discovery:
The tomb of Father Tobyn had been disturbed, the door left ajar during the chaos of the Goblin raid. He reported this to Sheriff Hemlock, who then involved the party in an investigation. Zantus didn’t jump to conclusions, but he was firm—this was no accident.
On the 25th, Zantus led the funeral rites for those lost in the Goblin raid. In robes of mourning, his voice guided the town through grief with the wisdom and steadiness of a seasoned spiritual leader. Pious joined him at the altar, as did her companions in the crowd, each honoring the dead in their own way.
