Underbelly
Underbelly is one of the newest locations in the four territories, existing for less than two hundred years so far. While the locals describe it as a hamlet, it is more like a village due to the consistent expansions it has gained. These have been mainly due to the fact that it is the home of Caspian, Bishop of Sickness and Health. Those afflicted with the worst diseases from around the world come to plead with him for his blessings, and many are granted them at a price. Underbelly is a sprawling, labyrinthine hamlet nestled on the edge of Caspian's solemn dominion, a place where the land and sea are locked in a delicate, unyielding embrace. Its wooden docks stretch out like desperate hands over mist-shrouded waters, while narrow, winding streets twist through clusters of moss-covered buildings. A perpetual dampness clings to the air, carrying the briny tang of saltwater and the earthy scent of algae, while the low hum of waves and creaking timbers fills the atmosphere. The hamlet is alive with activity: a bustling market where fishmongers and herbalists peddle their wares, quiet alleys where secrets are whispered, and vibrant taverns where sailors sing of victories and losses. Overhead, the towering spire of Caspian's church pierces the horizon, its solemn bell tolling through the mist, a reminder of the ever-watchful bishop who presides over this enigmatic and thriving sanctuary.
Demographics
Underbelly is a melting pot of the dregs and lesser folk that the world has to offer. It was formed originally when a group of humans were cured of their ailments by the original Bishop of Sickness and Health. The group built the Bishop a chapel and homes just popped up around it over time. Every household provides anything they can to whoever may need it, leaving everyone fairly similar standing in terms of wealth.
Government
The Hamlet runs under a loose Theocracy style government where all people who live in the boundaries of Underbelly answer directly to Bishop Caspian himself. This leaves the people of Underbelly mostly at their own wits when it comes to trade and responsibilities. People work where work is needed, and adapt when the time is right.
Infrastructure
The town of Underbelly has been built off of the backs of fisher folk who gain their living and supplies from the bounties granted by Caspians sea creature related blessings and abilities. Though years of growth has brought people of different professions to the town, meaning that now they run heavily on the fishing business, medical supplies, and ocean medium related artwork.
Districts
The Docks
The Docks of Underbelly are a bustling port of weathered wooden planks reaching their salt stained hands out to the sea, desperately grasping for the water. The rustic area is tainted with the permanent stench of fish, supplemented by the briny salt odor of the sea. A small handful of sloops and a couple ketches used by the villagers for fishing or traveling the coast of the Island are almost always moored on the smaller dock, while the much larger dock holds the anchor point for the much larger brigantine owned by the local adventurers known simply as The Fishermen. The Fishermen are often on the dock, selling or donating their goods and wares, repairing local boats for the folk that live there, and repairing their own ship after particularly rough moments on the sea.
The Eye
The Eye of Underbelly is the center section of the town where the shops, taverns, and medical offices of the town circle a large statue of the local hero and legend, The Good Captain. From the town's thriving bar culture, to music and books, and even to guns and armor, The Eye is where any visitors with gold burning a hole in their pocket go for any and all money spending and good time having needs. The atmosphere of The Eye is charming, full of a quaint yet bustling seaside feeling that could warm the heart of even the most stone cold hearted adventurer. The ground is paved with a weathered cobblestone, carefully and lovingly layed by the town's founders and according to local rumors, the Bishop himself. Narrow alleys connect The Eyes buildings to the outer circle of the town, letting in the sounds of warm and lively homes, bustling with new familial traditions being made, and old ones being thoughtfully practiced. The smell of the food from taverns and restaurants fills the roads with an invigorating scent that brings many back to nostalgic memorys of home cooked meals.
The Brooks
The Brooks are the outer edges of Underbelly, holding almost the etirety of the homes where the poeple of underbelly live. Patchy roofs huddle together, standing above cottage like homes. The clearly handmade structures are engraved in what seem like random spots with symbols of Kos and Bishop Caspian. The homes give off the feeling of modest folk working together with what little they have to create a true home. As one walks through the narrow streets in front of the homes, it is not uncommon to be overcome with the smell of smoked meats and roasting fish being prepared in the houses of hard working Underbellonians.
