The Granite Mountains

The mountains are widely known for being almost entirely out of granite, a material that is not only very hard to dig, but also very hard to process. As such, there are practically none holds within the mountain range, except for one. The Hul-Vazhatun hold. The hold itself is older than both the Golden Valley and Tinvein, yet only recently has it started getting the shape that it’s known for, a hold.

The Landship Antiquity

Deep within a seemingly consistently-sized cave, a young dwarf stumbled across something he could only describe as a beast made of steel, cold and stagnant at the end of the cave. After further investigation, it was discovered that what this young dwarf found was one of the Antiquities of the world. All of the greatest dwarven artisans were called and sent to investigate this machine, and through a miracle, one of them managed to turn this steel beast on. After seeing it move, he called it the “The Landship”.   After spending more time with the machine, it was figured that it itself runs on coal and is, in fact, steerable. After this information was released to the Elder, he was more than certain with what he’s going to do with it. As such, the first hold of this mountain range was created. With this machine, digging through the tough granite rock became whilst still hard, a possible option, and all that was needed for it was steel to replace its mining gear and the coal to keep it running.   Many have tried to replicate the intricate and complex design of this machine, although after many attempts, everyone concluded that without dismantling this machine, they would not be able to figure it out. The Elder gave the permission to go ahead with dismantling it, yet no artisan was brave enough to actually do it, as not being able to put it back together would mean the end of the hold. As such, the machine is still running, waiting for someone brave enough to take it apart.

The Mountain Hold

The population
Many of the dwarves who were sick of the surface flooded in, hoping to finally live their life underground, as they believe they were destined for. The population grew to around 40 thousand, which caused another issue: Food.
The Food situation
The granite rock is far from sufficient enough to grow food in, and without food, the hold cannot grow. As such, the hold started exporting all the granite and coal it mined to the [WEST NATION], who in turn gave them back fertile soil on which they could grow mushrooms.
A fortress
The hold itself consists of several different hallways, all large enough to fit the largest of leviathans, but small enough to support itself without collapsing. Of course, no risks are taken and the whole hold is supported by layers of wood and copper (which is used due to it oxidizing differently than Iron, which would have to be constantly replaced). The huge size is, of course, used very defensively as well. As there is only one entrance to the hold, and digging one's way around the entrance is pretty much impossible, any invaders can be defeated in a defacto "kill zone", which would be the entrance's huge fortress that consists of catapults, balistas, explosive traps, etc..
The dependence on Integrity
As such, the whole hold can be defeated in a different way, one that a dozen of halflings have semi-successfully managed to pull off, at least until they were noticed by the locals and dealt with by the guards. After that, the security measures became much tighter as the Elder realised the potential threat that infiltrations can bring upon the hold
Infiltration. As a frontal assault is basically impossible, the only way to conquer the hold is through the inside. But of course, with that being the only way, TIGHT security measures are bound to follow. As a way to prevent anyone unwanted from getting in, or out, all that migrate through the gates are checked several times, traders are known to wait sometimes for days before being let through, but once one get through the gates, they are given the liberty of exploring the entire hold as they please, if they can ignore the dozen guards guarding almost every corner of it.

In spite of the city being the only actual hold residing inside of a mountain, a large portion of the infrastructure still needs to be outside, primarily due to trade and protection in case of a siege.

With the giant mining operations, a lot of granite is left over, which is often used to build statues, may it be religious or purely aeshetical. Many would say that there are far too many statues, but let those people ask themselves, what would they do with a lot of time, a lot of stone and a chisel?
