Elves

The Elves were an ancient race of adept magic users. they were known for being incredibly small in numbers despite their extremely long lifespan.   The elves were a primarily solitary race, taking little interest in co-mingling outside of their communities, due to their insular nature few references of them exist in moderns texts. But the accounts that have survived describe have other races (namely the Orc and the Kith) describe them as being flighty and somewhat standoffish.   Elves are said to have possessed far keener hearing ad smell than any other race and lived on a nocturnal cycle, only awaking during the day to trade what was neccesary to the Kith. Their relationship with the Kith was somewhat strained in the aftermath of the The Kitham-Elven Conflict where disputes broke out over territory until a peace treaty was brokered. In the treaty elves were given above ground territory mostly within the mountain and the ability to build underground freely provided they were away from human structures.   The elves built massive underground settlements and compounds all across Gand whih all connected with a series of tunnels. By using the magic they developed they were able to rapidly build structures, developing rudimentary machines and locomatives powered by complex magic insignias. In doing so they created a sustainable underground world the heart of which was The Elven Undercity .   Although the origin is unclear it is said that their advanced magic was underdeveloped and opened them up to a magical corruption which manifested as a tramsmittable and deadly Elven Plague  that ravaged the population of Elves. The elves wishing to save the races above from this sickness chose to collapse the entrances to their tunnels and citys seperating them from the outside and leaving them to die. Decades later the kith would begin the process of re-opening the tunnels and moving into the abandoned structures the Elves left, gutting the structures to make them suitable for humans this would form the basis of many towns including Zentawen the capital city.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The Elves were mole-like in appearance, tall with a straight up and down torso, meaning they lack prounced hips, waists and breasts. despite their slim build they have thick corded mucles in their arms and legs but would often walk hunched over. They have fine hair over their bodies and skin that is pale, brown, grey or a patchwork combination. Their hands and feel were long and shovel-shaped ending in scooped talons. They had long slender ears, and wide-set large black eyes with a remarkable range of vision. Elves keep the same set of teeth their whole lives which continue to grow, the inscisors grow the quickest and curve inwards, there is a split in their lip which allows their teeth a large bite range and is ideal for grinding down their surfaces and food

Genetics and Reproduction

due to their long lifespan elves have brief fertility windows punctuated by centuries to conceive. Concieving a child already is inherently difficult as elves have innate healing magic which targets foreign bodies, like that of an unborn child. Elven children grow at a slightly slower rate than Orcs and humans, but remain an adult for the majority of their lives and can live for around 5 or so centuries.

Growth Rate & Stages

Elves grow at a slower rate than humans and orcs but still progress through key milestones of development, beggining with infancy, progressing to adolsescence and finally adulthood. Elves spend the majority of their lives in adulthood and appear to age less externally than other races. When elves die it happens suddenly, they rapidly decline into death by old age. When they become sick they appear healthy until rapid decline.

Ecology and Habitats

Because elves are suseptible to bright light and sound, they opt to stay underground in the wide tunnel cities they have cultivated, over the centuries the tunnels have gone from being rudiemtary mine carverns to well-engineered feats of architecture. Elves can live underground for their entire lives with no complications, although many a curious adolescent elf may investigate the surface. Elves tend to run warm and thrive in the colder climates making the temperate underground perfect for them.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Elves are nocturnal, they have small eyes and poor vision but are capable of retaining and reflecting light for dark areas, they see a more muted versions of colour as a result with many elves only seeing shades of grey. They also keen hearing (although not as keen as a goblin) due to having large conical shaped ears a which are capable of swivilling independently of each other.
