Faerûn

The Heart of the Forgotten Realms

Faerûn is the vast and storied continent where countless legends of the Forgotten Realms unfold. It is a land of diverse peoples, ancient empires, and living gods who still shape the world. Magic and steel, faith and ambition — all play their part in the struggles that define this realm.
For adventurers, Faerûn is both home and frontier: a place where hidden ruins wait beneath quiet hills, and where the fate of kingdoms may hinge on the actions of a small band of heroes.

Geography

  • The Sword Coast: A rugged stretch of land along the western edge of Faerûn, bordered by the Sea of Swords. It is famed for bustling ports, frontier towns, and dangerous wilderness between them.
  • Neverwinter: Once called the “Jewel of the North,” the city rebuilds after tragedy, still scarred by the eruption of Mount Hotenow. It thrives under Lord Neverember’s firm rule.
  • Waterdeep: Known as the “City of Splendors,” Waterdeep is the greatest city on the Sword Coast, a center of trade, politics, and intrigue where adventurers from across the world seek their fortunes.
  • Baldur’s Gate: South of Waterdeep lies this gritty, wealthy city-state, its gates opening both to prosperity and corruption. Its merchant lords are as dangerous as its underworld.
  • Phandalin: A small frontier town built atop the ruins of an older settlement, near the Sword Mountains. Though remote, Phandalin has grown in importance thanks to nearby mines and brave settlers willing to rebuild.

History

Faerûn’s history stretches back through countless ages of empire and catastrophe:

  • Ancient realms such as Netheril and the Illefarn elves shaped the land, leaving behind ruins and mysteries.
  • The Sword Coast has always been a crossroads of trade, invasion, and adventure — its cities rising and falling with the tides of fortune.
  • In recent memory, the Spellplague and other magical upheavals shook the continent, but people endure, rebuilding stronger than before.
  • Today, the Sword Coast thrives as a patchwork of powerful cities (like Waterdeep, Neverwinter, and Baldur’s Gate) and frontier settlements (like Phandalin), each with its own ambitions, alliances, and secrets.

For those who travel its roads and seas, Faerûn is a world alive with danger, opportunity, and the chance to carve a name that will echo in history.
