The Rathen-Pattern M.84/92, officially the Gewehr der Königlichen Manufaktur zu Rathen, Modell 1884/92 , is a bolt-action rifle created by the Royal Armories of Adraus and specially designed by Konrad Varenich, an Adraus gunsmith and former military engineer.

Utility

In 1884, the Desh Interregnum War began in the Desh Subcontinent, south of Azora. As word spread, the Adraus people began to fear how this would begin to affect them. In response, the Kingdom's gunsmiths and weaponsmakers decided to create a newer, more modern rifle to replace many of their aging Model 55s. The initial rifle was designed for the desert and frontiers by Konrad Varenich, an Adrausii gunsmith and soldier working with the 2nd Colonial Forces in Desh - who at the time were refusing to get involved without an official act of war but were secretly helping train soldiers.   However, while the gun was considered a modern, desert firearm, it did have some problems. It's magazine was fixed and internal, thus bullets had to be placed one at a time and lack of resources in Desh meant many of these guns were clay-forged parts meaning they could not be easily replaced.   By the wars end in 1890, the Adrausii Rathen-Pattern M.84 was considered a relic by many modern standards which had either adopted similar or better rifles. Under King Theoderich un Rathenau III's reforms, the weaponsmiths decided to upgrade and modernize their desert rifle.   First, they removed the old magazine and replaced it with a clip-fed internal magazine, utilizing the new Serenauxii stripper clips, as well as added ladder sights. Secondly, they added a modern bayonet lug which allowed for the newer, larger bayonets to be affixed. Finally, with modern metal working, a newer, smoother rifled barrel was added that doubled the initial effective range. By 1892, the first batches were issued to the 1st and 5th Armies of the Royal Adrausii Army, with much love and success.

Social Impact

While the 1884 Varient is now seen as a relic, it did inspire a surge of changes that many armies around Azora were looking for at the time of its creation. The 1884 challenged the status quo of gunmaking and military technology. It moved the nations from traditional mussle-loading firearms to the newer, considered impractical bolt-action rifles as well as help end the era of cavalry dominance by creating a weapon that could easily outfire and outgun whole units.
