The Keres - Winged Deaths

The Keres are the personifications of violent and cruel deaths. They are responsible for ferrying the souls of the dead to the underworld, specifically those who have died in battle, by accident, from murder or disease.   There are hundreds of Keres, each with their own personality. They can commonly be found circling battlefields or locations of disasters like vultures, ready to drag the souls of the dead to the Underworld. It is said that mighty warriors and heroes are constantly followed by a flock of Keres, each awaiting their glorious death.   The Keres are one of the caretakers of the Underworld, assisting Hades and Persephone. in the management of the Lands of the Dead. They are also a psychopomp, one of the beings responsible for ferrying souls to the Underworld, along with Charon, Hermes and Thanatos. As a psychopomp they are capable of passing through The Divine Gatewithout much hindrance.   Like Chthonic Deities, due to the Keres’ association with the Underworld and death. They are rarely referred to by name, as it was believed it would call their attention. Therefore they are almost always referred to by epithets, such as “The Winged Deaths”.

Apperance:

The Keres all look different, but they are exclusively depicted as feminine, commonly young women with black feathered wings.
