Hades

Hades, or more commonly known as the Underworld, is the Realm of Death, ruled over by the Gods Hades and Persephone, and home to many of the Chthonic Gods.   Hades is the plane where most souls go after they die, once a soul arrives in the Underworld it is taken to be judged by thethree Judges of the Dead, Aeacus, Minos, and Rhadamanthus. The judged soul is then sent to either the Fields of Punishment, the Asphodel Meadows or the Elysian Fields to “live” out their sentence for the rest of eternity, or until they fade from mortal memory.

The Fields of Punishment

  The sentence for all those who have created havoc in the universe, or committed crimes against the gods, are the Fields of Punishment. A place of eternal suffering and pain, where immaculately crafted punishments are designed by Hades and the Erinyes to specially torture each individual sinner for the rest of eternity.

The Asphodel Meadows

  The sentence for the ordinary or indifferent souls, those who did not commit any significant crimes, but who also did not achieve any greatness or recognition that would warrant them being admitted to the Elysian Fields. The Asphodel Meadows is where the fate of the majority of mortals reside. It is a calm and still place, peaceful, where souls wander the endless fields of flowers, contemplative and at rest.

The Elysian Fields

  Elysium is the sentence for the especially distinguished, an eternal paradise, where the souls of the dead rest in peace and luxury. The souls that dwell in Elysium are celebrated, a reward for their devotion and good deeds in life. Those who are in proximity to the gods are commonly granted admission, with most who reside there being the devout, demigods and great heroes. Isles located by calm waters, covered in lush vegetation of opulent temples, where every need is met for all eternity.

The Rivers of the Underworld

  There are 5 rivers in the Underworld where certain souls are sent to be cleansed or punished. Each river is personified by a Daemon, a caretaker of the Underworld. Some of these rivers flow into other planes, such as the Styx and Phlegethon that flow into the Nine Hells:

The Acheron

The Acheron is the main entrance to the Underworld, where the majority of souls are carried to the afterlife. The Acheron represents the pain of death, particularly the emotional pain. The Acheron is sometimes known as the Grey River, the River of Pain, The River of Woe or the River of Lost Souls.

The Cocytus

The Cocytus is the river that travels through the Asphodel Meadows. The Cocytus represents the grief of the dead and bears the lamentation of the living. The Cocytus is sometimes known as the Blue River, The River of Wailing or the River of Sorrow.

The Lethe

The Lethe is the river that travels through Elysium and Oneiroi, drinking of the river’s waters result in the drinker forgetting their past. The Lethe represents oblivion and the inevitable end to all mortal souls. The Lethe is sometimes known as the Yellow River, the River of Oblivion or the River of Forgetfulness.

The Phlegethon

The Phlegethon is the river that travels through the Fields of Punishment. The Phlegethon is a river of fire, it represents the lost potential of life, burning away all that could have been. The river’s boiling waters are commonly used as part of the torture of the damned in the Fields of Punishment. The Phlegethon is sometimes known as the River of Fire or the River of Punishment.

The Styx

The Styx is the river that marks the boundary between the living and the dead. The Styx is a river of blood and the largest river in the Underworld. It is a corrosive river that represents the hatred, anger and fear of death. Oaths sworn on the river Styx can not be broken, binding even the gods. The Styx is sometimes known as the River of Blood, the River of Hate or the River of Oaths.
