Kokytos - River of Wailing

Kokytos is the personification of one of the Rivers of the Underworld, alongside Acheron, Lethe, Phlegethon and Styx. She is a melancholic and depressive figure who is constantly in a state of mourning.   Kokytos is one of the caretakers of the Underworld, assisting Hades and Persephone in the management of the Lands of the Dead. Kokytos is mainly responsible for ferrying souls through the underworld, specifically to the Asphodel Meadows. She is also responsible for bearing the lamentation of the living and delivering it to the dead.   Like Chthonic Deities, due to Kokytos’ association with the Underworld and death, she is rarely referred to by name, as it was believed it would call her attention. Therefore she is almost always referred to by epithets, such as “The River of Wailing”.

Apperance:

Kokytos is usually depicted as feminine, commonly as a blue skinned figure with long patchy black hair that has been torn out in places and black tears streaking down her cheeks.    She is almost exclusively depicted nude and sometimes she is depicted wearing a black veil.
