Fenixian War For Independence

The Fenixian War for Independence was a large scale rebellion of non-adepts against the oppressive regimes of the magocracy of the Magi Republic. The rebellion began under the leadership of a firebrand revolutionary named Alfonse Fenix. Fenix was a non-adept born into a house of casters. Unable to accept his lower station began writing essays and giving speeches critical of the way the government treated non-adepts.   As his reach spread so did his popularity, but ultimately Fenix was gaining little traction with anyone. Citizen Magi, and Magi Nobelus alike laughed off Fenix's complaints as nothing more but the pining of a man unhappy that the gods had passed him by, and non-adepts were slow to join his cause out of fear of retribution from the lords they served. This would be the case for three years until finally Fenix had made enough enemies and he was imprisoned.   Fenix spent five years in prison, charged with sedition, before being released. Fenix spent his time in prison productively, and built a network of conspirators and allies. Working through fellow prisoners drawn to his cause, and his own contacts on the outside Fenix soon had an organized movement on his hands. All it needed to spill over into full on rebellion was the right spark, and that spark came six months after Fenix was released from prison. A minor noble was assaulted by non-adept dissenters during a drunken brawl in the city of Pealham, a prefecture capital in the foothills of the Black Mountains. Both non-adepts were summarily beheaded for their crime. The severity of the penalty sparked rebellion through the prefecture and its neighbors nearly overnight. Fenix had his rebellion.   Fenix quickly realized that his rebels could not defeat the might of the Republican Army on their own, and he sent envoys to the Northern Kingdoms, Dwarven Kingdoms, Lower Lete, and Lete all seeking help. Only Lete responded. Sensing an opportunity to weaken a rival the King of Lete sent Vulcan Kerendas with a large host of soldiers to help the rebels as best he could.

The Conflict

Outcome

Immediately after the surrender of Magi forces to Vulcan Kerendas and Letian scholars began helping defectors from the Magi Republic set up their own government. During this process, and due to betrayals from within the rebellion, Vulcan instead donned the mantle of Emperor and allowed each of his new prefectures to form their own governments. Lords who had allied with the rebellion mostly found their holdings intact. Those that hadn't were ousted and replaced by some form of elected representation.   The Magi Republic meanwhile was reeling due to the loss of nearly half of its territory. This would immediately begin years of insurrection, infighting, and skirmishes with the new Empire of Demenia.

Aftermath

Long term the Magi Republic loses much of its territory but soon quells any further rebellions. Reform comes slowly for the non-adepts who were left behind in the Republic, many of whom still struggle under the yoke of the magocracy.   The newly founded Empire of Demenia was forced onto the political stage overnight as its creation upset a delicate balance of power between the Republic, Lete, and Lower Lete. At the time of the rebellion's close Kerendas was betrothed to the King of Lete's eldest daughter. This meant that Lete now had a new ally in dealing with its rivals, and over the next few years fledgling empire was invaded by both the Republic, twice trying to regain lost territory, and by Lower Lete, trying to conquer the Empire before it could get its roots down.

Historical Significance

Legacy

Since the rebellion the Empire of Demenia has emerged as an aggressively expansionist country but also extremely progressive in terms of government and innovation. Most of the people living under the empire are relatively happy with it. The Emperor uses this as an excuse to invade neighboring countries, slowly conquering small pieces of their territory under the guise of liberation. In reality the Emperor has his eyes on conquering the entire continent except the Iron Spine Mountains.
