Magi Republic

Ruler: The Council of Magi Capitol: Maopolis Population: 3,000,000   The Republic is a magocracy ruled by elected wizards and sorcerers from various noble, and magical houses. Everyone who is not a competent spellcaster in the Republic is relegated to a second class citizen. Those capable of using magic are elevated to the ranks of Citizen Magus where they enjoy a generous yearly stipend from the state and the right to vote. Casters who find themselves the third generation in a line of casters are elevated to Magus Nobelus where they enjoy even more benefits including a much larger yearly stipend and a yearly extra vote.   The Republic is bordered in the north by the Northern Kingdoms, to the east by the Demenian Empire, and to the south by Lower Lete. Given that the Empire rose out of a rebellion of Republican cities both nations are generally very hostile with each other. The Republic lost this rebellion in large part due to interference from Vulcan Kerendas, and the country of Lete (now part of the empire following its King's death). This loss cut the Republic's territory nearly in half. Twenty years later it is still recovering.   The Republic is an amazing place full of buildings, creatures, and places that simply could not exist without the use of magic. Maopolis is built on the largely intact ruins of an ancient High Elf city whose name was lost to the ages. Casters from all over eventually find themselves in the Republic for one thing or another. Foreigners who cannot use magic are, at best, politely ignored. At worst they are abducted and forced to do menial, and dangerous labor that the Citizen Magi cannot be bothered to do themselves.
