Maremot (MAR-ruh-mot)

The first thing you notice about the town of Maremot is the tower pointing up atop the artificial mound, the town huddled on and around the mound all the way to the strands. The salty smell and the quieting roar of the sea is ever-present, an oasis in the boggy expanse of the Great Austral Delta.
The fishing town of Maremot sits by the western mouth of the Green Appius, the Eastern branch of the Great Austral Delta. The river itself is known to the townspeople as the Triculo Appio. Maremot’s town centre sits on an artificial mount from which the town takes its name, surrounding a sturdy clock tower. The rest of the town, known as the Harbourtown, sits by the seaside on dykes. Maremot is not walled, since it is between the forks of the river arm.

Demographics

Maremot consists mostly of fishermen and traders from all of the Children Races, though Humans are the dominant race.

Government

The feudal overlord of Maremot is the Abbot of Monsallorea, but the town is governed by the parish guild council of St. Gulibert, which assists the official representative of the Abbot, the bailiff. In practice, the chairman of the parish guild council is more powerful than the bailiff.

Industry & Trade

Maremot is a fishing village, though it also benefits from trade. However, since the Abbots of Monsallorea focus their attention on supporting the Abbey, there is not much in the ways of customs officers in Maremot, making it a popular destination for smuggling to avoid the tolls levied at Sammelore-ci-Mar and at the mouth of the Blue Appius. A number of “fishermen” in the town actually use this as a cover to smuggle goods.

Infrastructure

Maremot sits atop an artificial mound made long ago by its inhabitants. The Harbourtown sits on dykes. A defining feature is its campanile belltower,  which dominates the view of the town.

Tourism

Few tourists come to Maremot, but when they do they stay at the inn of the Foolish Manatee.

Architecture

Most of the buildings are made of wood, with thatch roofs.

Geography

The town sits between two forks of the Green Appius river, known locally as the Triculo Appio, atop an artificial mound that keeps it dry from the elements. It is not walled, since the river offers sufficient protection. Dykes contain the rest of the town.

Natural Resources

Fish is abundant near Maremot.
