Irvona

Irvona sits on the west side of the Auchelle mountains, with a coast on the storm sea. It shares borders with Dourdul, Boorum, Eydolmyn, and Gonogadoe. Most of the population of Irvona is Human, though Wee Folk and Havarks are common. Dwarves and Elves are far less common, but not so rare as to draw stares. The country's capitol is Polistopolis, commonly called Polisto. To most of the world Polisto is Irvona.

Geography

The coast of Irvona is a mix of rugged and rocky beaches and saltwater marshes. Inland, there are vast swamps, dense forests, steep mountain slopes and misty moors. Irvona is a blend of many terrain types, with the land being naturally divided into four regions.

History

The city of Polistopolis was established by Aegethan wizards in antiquity. For thousands of years the city hosted The Penultimate Thaumaturgical University, a collection of the world's greatest magic colleges. The forests around the city were controlled by elves. Twergheim, a dwarf nation, flourished to the north. After the elves migrated away from the area goblins, hoghoblins, and giants competed with humans for control of the region.   The wizard Irvona Starwatcher pushed out the non-humans and established the borders of the country that eventually came to bear her name. She declined to lead the country and retired to Starwatcher Tower. When Twergheim was attacked by demons the majority of the colleges of magic vanished. The School of Necromancy, the Grand Library, and the Garden of Ghosts are the only locations that remained in place. The land itself was reshaped, as if the other campus grounds never existed. The buildings, wizards, staff, and support personnel... all gone. Some off-campus wizard towers remained, while others collapsed, turned into snow and melted, or, in one case, became engulfed in an eternal flame that burns flesh but does not appear to affect non-living material. The city's noble houses appealed to Kent to remove the remaining Necromancers and to help protect Irvona's northern border from the approaching Hoggoblin and Demon horde. The necromancers relocated their college to Lugna, and the Lux valley became a protectorate functionally controlled by Kent. Irvona's noble families, descendants of the cities greatest wizards, selected a King and Queen, who agreed to marry. Their reign lasted just under nine years, when they were executed for heresy by the city priests and their own families. Shortly after the execution the churches and nobles jointly decided to form the Council of Equanimity. The identity of members is public knowledge, but the number of members varies from year to year and how their members are selected is a state secret.
