Prithvi, also known as
Bhumi or
Bhudevi the
Vast One, is the
goddess of the earth, plantlife and nourishment, of the planet itself. She plays the role of mother goddess, embodying
stability, fertility, benevolence and generosity. Prithvi provides for, protects and supports all life which lives atop her vast body, further associated with truth, fertility and abundance--a giver of life and a powerful foundation. Prithvi herself might also go by the name
Prithvi Mata or
Bharat Mata,
Mother Earth or
Mother of Bharat! Meanwhile, she is known as
Ibu Pertiwi in
Suwarnadwipa and is highly regarded by the Bauddha, considered their first goddess. Overall, she is associated with both
Fliral and
Ylithuum, depending on region.
One of Prithvi's key myths involve the asura
Hiranyaksha who sunk Prithvi down to into the churning sea of
Samudra Manthana. In order to save her,
Vishnu incarnated into the avatar
Varaha, part man and part wild boar. He used his tusks to slay
Hiranyaksha and and raise Prithvi out of the water! Some place her as a second wife to Vishnu thanks to these events, but most believe Prithvi is married to the
Sky Father Dyaus. However, Prithvi is an independant goddess more well known for her divine children and role in agriculture than for her husband. After all, in the verdant, southern regions of
Yaxiya, such as
To Rong Lua and
Suwarnadwipa, Dyaus and Prithvi are the cosmic parents responsible for the creation of the world and the gods, replacing
Aditi and
Kashyapa. However, most Sanatanis in
Bharatavarsa and the
Frozen Wastes view Prithvi as a daughter of
Aditi, both Prithvi and Dyaus members of the Vasus. Their own children are the goddesses of dawn and the night,
Ushas and
Nisha.
