Aethel National Church of Lathander

The Aethelian Church of Lathander is both the spiritual heart of Aethel and one of its most powerful political institutions. Rooted in divine mandate and royal lineage, the Church venerates Lathander, the Morninglord, as the source of light, life, and destiny. It is a hierarchical theocracy, with the Sovereign serving as both monarch and the divine steward of the faith, advised by the sacred body known as the Collegia.
From sun-drenched cathedral spires to hidden battle-cloisters, the Church guides the realm’s moral compass, blesses its wars, and binds its people with shared purpose. Every citizen is expected to pay homage to the dawn, and priests are as likely to be seen delivering sermons as they are accompanying trade caravans or standing alongside knights on campaign. The Church sees itself not merely as a religion, but as the vessel of Lathander’s will on earth.

Structure

The Aethel National Church of Lathander is organized into several ecclesiastical ranks which serve the church in their own ways:
  • Sovereign: The divine ruler of Aethel and supreme earthly representative of Lathander. The final temporal and spiritual authority, the Sovereign’s word is sacred law, and they are believed to carry a divine spark inherited from the Morninglord himself.
  • Matriarch/Patriarch: Spouse of the Sovereign, serving a highly visible but non-legislative role in church affairs. Often charged with overseeing matters of public morality, charitable works, and ceremonial rites. In rare cases, the Matriarch/Patriarch may be called to break ties in the Collegia.
  • High Prioress/Priorate: Leader of the Collegia, the council that governs church law, theology, and canon appointments. Appointed directly by the Sovereign. This figure is second only to the Sovereign in religious matters and is often the face of the Church in international diplomacy. Along with their Collegia duties, this figure oversees the training of new theologians and battle-clerics in Klosterdorf.
  • Pralat: Regional religious governors overseeing major cities and regions. They ensure theological adherence, appoint lower clerics, and act as political advisors. There is usually one Pralat assigned to each city of significance in Aethel.
  • Archbishop: Aides to Pralats, they supervise an ecclesiastical region made up of several bishoprics. Archbishops also sit as permanent members of the Collegia. They lead major liturgical events and are responsible for doctrinal purity across their regions.
  • Bishop: The spiritual leader of a single large temple, cathedral, or rural diocese. Bishops are appointed by Pralats and may be promoted to Archbishop over time. They oversee major temples and maintain strong local political power.
  • Archpriest: A ceremonial and functional title often given to senior priests who oversee large congregations or who have served with distinction. May also act as administrators to Bishops and Archbishops.
  • Archimandrite: Typically headmasters or abbots of major monasteries and divine academies. In Klosterdorf, both the scholarly monastery and the militant monastery are led by their own Archimandrites. There is also an Archimandite overseeing the arcane research station in Namel. The role carries great respect but limited political power.
  • Priest: The backbone of the church. Priests lead daily worship, perform marriages and funerals, administer rites, and serve the local spiritual needs of the people. Some priests are itinerant, others remain tied to a specific community or shrine.
  • Novice: Initiates in religious training, typically beginning their education at age 10–12. Novices serve for 5–10 years before being elevated to priesthood. Many remain in minor orders throughout their lives.

  • The Collegia

The Collegia Lathanderus is the ruling body of the Aethelian Church beneath the Sovereign. It serves a role similar to a religious senate, guiding the nation's moral, legal, and doctrinal compass. It has some overlap with the Royal Council of Light in the area of state religion, but diverges in that the Council mostly advises the Sovereign on matters of state and foreign politics. The Collegia is also the only body—other than the Sovereign—that may initiate an inquest into high-ranking church corruption, divine silence, or failed miracles.

    Culture

The culture of the Aethelian Church of Lathander is a blend of radiant optimism, rigid tradition, and subtle, quiet control. While the Church presents itself as a beacon of hope and light, its internal culture is far more complex, shaped by centuries of divine legacy, political entanglement, and a growing anxiety about maintaining its influence in a world that is, slowly but surely, changing.
