Virelin’s Step

Demographics

The city's demographics are deeply seasonal. During festival years, the city is majority Thalrani, as clans and families reunite for the event. In non-festival years, the permanent population is a quiet mix of Thalrani stewards (roughly 60%), native Umbrenori (about 25%), a sprinkling of long-term visitors, and a small percentage of other races, many of whom stay to study, protect, or preserve the Spire’s lore.

Government

Virelin’s Step is governed by the Council of the Step, a seven-member body drawn entirely from Thalrani heritage lines. Each steward serves for a term of ten years, overlapping with the festival cycle. The Council’s authority is deliberately non-sovereign: Virelin is considered neutral ground, with no throne, no land claims, and no intention of nationhood.

Defences

Though the city has no standing army, it is far from defenseless. The Wards of the Loom prevent violence, corruption, and uncontrolled magic within city limits. The Threadwatchers, a sacred militia formed from sworn members of each diaspora branch, oversee safety during the festival. Beyond them, a secretive order known as the Silent Loom operates from the shadows—ensuring the sanctity of the site is never compromised from within.

Industry & Trade

Virelin’s economy thrives on memory, legacy, and artistry. During the Festival, artisans from across Elaris descend upon the Merchant’s Fringe to sell embroidered genealogies, enchanted tapestries, and relic-inspired heirlooms. The city also exports Threadglass, a unique semi-translucent mineral found only near the Shatterdeep’s edge, and Memory Moss, which is harvested to create glowing inks, vision candles, and ritual salves.

Infrastructure

Designed for impermanence, Virelin’s infrastructure prioritizes mobility and reverence. Streets are lined with woven-light lanterns, canal paths glow faintly from Aether-Moss, and most buildings are crafted from silken tents reinforced with foldable wood and glass-thread rope. At the city's edge, the Silver Causeway, a shimmering bridge of enchanted stone, leads toward the Unweaving Spire, though access is restricted outside festival dates.

Districts

Virelin is divided into several transient yet symbolically important districts. The central heart is Spindleward, home to the Loomhall and the ceremonial preparation zones. To the south lies Silkslope, a residential rise for those who maintain the city year-round. Threadroot serves as the hosting grounds for returning diaspora families, with pavilions raised and dismantled every decade. Pilgrim’s Fold is the outermost caravansary district, where non-Thalrani travelers stay. Lastly, Merchant’s Fringe sprawls along the western outskirts, a chaotic market that thrives during festival years and hibernates during the rest.

Assets

Among the city's most treasured assets is the Loomhall Archives, a vault of ancestral records where bloodlines are traced and confirmed. The Loomstone Ring, an open-air amphitheater of rune-inscribed monoliths, serves as both a storytelling ground and debate forum for the Council. The city’s arcane boundaries are maintained by a network of enchanted Ward Crystals, which suppress large-scale magic and stabilize the land during high traffic years.

Guilds and Factions

The Loomcrafters’ Union oversees all festival decorum and ceremonial garments, while The Keepers of Kin serve as genealogists and lore-minders for diaspora lineages. Not all factions are revered—smuggling rings like the Silkcutters have arisen to falsify ancestry and sneak forbidden relics past the wards. A splinter sect, the Ashthread Covenant, advocates for reclaiming the city as a permanent Thalrani homeland, even if it means open defiance of the ancient exile.

History

Founded in 104 DV, Virelin’s Step was born out of a collective grief shared by the first generation born after the Great Sundering. A temporary encampment evolved into a ritual site, and eventually, into a permanent city built solely to house the Festival of Threads. Over time, its fame spread, bringing with it commerce, tourism, and tension. In 270 DV, a treaty signed by all five continents formally declared Virelin neutral ground, protected by tradition and law. The decision remains contentious—especially among Thalrani elders who believe the city should be exclusively theirs.

Points of interest

The Loomhall, center of ritual and political activity, sits at the heart of Spindleward. The Silver Causeway leads from the city's edge toward the Unweaving Spire, though it is sealed with seven arcane locks during most of the decade. Other landmarks include the Pilgrim’s Echo, a whisperstone circle capable of carrying a voice across great distances, and the Diasporic Well, whose waters are believed to carry ancestral visions during the Festival.

Tourism

Though it was built to honor the Thalrani alone, Virelin has become one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in all of Elaris. Travelers from Aetheron to Solaris seek to witness the great unifying rituals of the diaspora. The city tightly regulates visitor access to sacred zones, and while most pilgrims are respectful, there are growing concerns that the festival has become more spectacle than remembrance.

Architecture

Unlike the stone cities of the modern age, Virelin’s structures are built from silken, folding architecture that can be transported and repurposed. Each building is a metaphor: impermanent, beautiful, and vulnerable to wind and memory. Even the Loomhall, the city’s centerpiece, is deconstructed every decade and rebuilt anew—preserving both tradition and humility.

Geography

Virelin sits upon a ringed plateau at the very edge of The Shatterdeep Expanse, where the world of Elaris begins to fracture into what once was Myriath. To the east lies the haze-covered horizon where the Unweaving Spire pierces the sky. To the west, fertile wetlands and river plains create a natural buffer zone, giving the city a sense of balance between the broken and the blooming.

Climate

The city experiences a temperate climate with mist-laced mornings and clear, golden afternoons. The month surrounding the Festival of Threads brings unpredictable rains and magical pressure spikes, which many believe are signs of ancestral presences. Outside this season, the weather is serene—reflecting the city's contemplative rhythm.

Natural Resources

The land surrounding Virelin yields Threadglass, Silkstone Bark, and Aether-Moss—all materials with spiritual or magical importance. These are carefully harvested and protected, as overharvesting is said to risk waking the echoes of the Sundering.
