Tenarius (Te-na-ri-us)

The Beacon of Prosperity and Faith

As dawn breaks in Tenarius, the air is thick with anticipation and excitement. The annual celebration of independence is here, an event that doubles as the birthday commemoration of Adamiel Bartholemæus Tamariel von Hinan Tenarius, the revered founder of the nation, and his heir, the beloved Adamiel the Second. Streets shimmer in hues of gold, echoing the opulence associated with Waukeen, the Lady of Gold.   For commoners like Lira, a humble florist, this day is the epitome of Tenarian unity and prosperity. She leaves her humble abode, her hands filled with a bouquet of golden sunflowers to offer at the temple, her heart full of reverence for the Lady of Gold and the rulers who brought her blessings to Tenarius.   The heart of the festivities is the grand plaza where stands a larger-than-life statue of Adamiel the First, cloaked in the morning sunlight. It's here that Lira catches her first glimpse of Adamiel the Second, a sight that takes her breath away. Adamiel the Second, the nation's beacon of hope, an arch-paladin of Waukeen, and rumored to be the first Champion of a God since the Time of Champions. His physical presence mirrors the power he represents, radiating a divine aura.   Adamiel the Second stands on the podium, his eyes gleaming with the joy of the festivities. Despite the bright ambiance, Lira notices a shadow of melancholy that subtly flickers across his visage. She has heard rumors of the abusive relationship between him and his late father, and can only imagine how the reminiscence might affect him. But more than that, she's aware of the burden he carries, the knowledge of the intricate, sometimes unforgiving machinations of their country's economic and religious machinery.   As the ceremony begins, Adamiel the Second raises his hand, his voice resonating across the plaza, "Today, we stand together, under the golden gaze of Waukeen, to celebrate our independence, our prosperity, and the legacy of my father."   The crowd erupts in a cheer, echoing the jubilance of the occasion. But in the midst of the celebration, Lira couldn't help but think of the loneliness of their leader, how he masked his sorrows behind his joyous facade. As the day wore on, the golden streets filled with laughter, dance, and merriment, Lira wished silently for Waukeen's blessings to fill the void in Adamiel the Second's heart.   In the intricate tapestry of celebration and introspection, the Independence Day festivities of Tenarius unfurled, a spectacle of joy, reverence, and a subtle, shared sadness - a microcosm of the nation's unique journey from bought independence to prosperous sovereignty.
An event from the Annual Wauken event; The Soveriegn Gold Week
Nestled in the eastern reaches of Sorashana, bordered by Tuetoenia to the south and Accordia to the west, lies the prosperous nation of Tenarius. Famed for its exceptional economic prowess, Tenarius is a testament to the power of gold and the freedom it can procure. Unlike most countries born of blood and conquest, Tenarius purchased its own independence from the mighty Pride Kingdoms Coalition, affirming its unique inception in the annals of Eastrix history. Tenarius played a pivotal role in ending the harrowing Sorashanan War, providing financial assistance and strategic insights that contributed to a peaceful resolution. This prosperous nation stands as an emblem of peace, proving that wealth when wisely managed, can be a potent instrument of positive change.
Central to Tenarian life is their profound dedication to Waukeen, Our Lady Gold. A creation deity from the Eastrixian pantheon, Waukeen is revered as the patron saint of gold and trade. Her primary dedication however is prosperity as a whole. This devotion is manifested through the Aristocratic Church of Waukeen, a major faith that extends its influence across Eastrix. The church celebrates wealth and economic growth, encouraging its followers to contribute to the proliferation of commerce and trade.
While skeptics question the nature of the church, suggesting it to be a financial cult rather than a true religious institution, the church's robust and detailed clergy structure dispels these doubts. The faithful follow strict tenets that promote the enrichment of civilization and happiness through mercantile trade. The clergy, composed of clerics and paladins of Waukeen, are instructed to donate a portion of their income to the church, invest in successful enterprises run by devout worshipers, and manipulate trade in subtle ways to further the church's goals.
Temples dedicated to Waukeen are a common sight in Tenarius, where commerce is vibrant and flourishing. These grand edifices, adorned with the finest materials, serve as banks, safe storage warehouses, stock exchanges, and other financial institutions, providing both religious and economic services to the populace. The most notable of these temples is the Star of Tenarius, a testament to the nation's dedication to Waukeen, the Lady of Gold.
In this symbiotic relationship between religion and economy, Tenarius has carved a distinct identity for itself. It stands as a beacon of wealth and prosperity, its golden streets and affluent populace bearing witness to the nation's unique devotion to Waukeen, the Lady of Gold.

Structure

In Tenarius there is a ranking of the structure within the country. This is the structure:    1. Arch-Paladin: This title is given to the spiritual and symbolic leader of Tenarius, the Arch-Paladin of Waukeen, currently held by Adamiel Bartholemæus Tamariel von Hinan Tenarius II.   2. Prime Steward: The highest-ranking civil servant in the nation, handling the day-to-day governance and acting as the chief advisor to the Arch-Paladin.   3. Coin Cardinals: Comparable to the cardinals in the Catholic Church, they are the highest-ranking clergy beneath the Arch-Paladin, responsible for ecclesiastical matters and advising the Arch-Paladin on spiritual matters. They also act as the religious heads of major regions within Tenarius.   4. Coin Bishops/Coin Crusaders: The Coin Bishops oversee the religious affairs of specific cities within their assigned regions. Coin Crusaders are tasked with the protection of the faith and enforcement of the church's doctrines and laws.   5. High Merchants: These are the heads of major mercantile families or corporations that own cities or large towns. They have sworn allegiance to the Arch-Paladin and Prime Steward, pledging to uphold the church's teachings within their domains. They also have a say in major national policies, particularly those related to commerce and trade.   6. Merchants/Trade Lords: They are rulers of smaller towns and large villages, and are under the governance of High Merchants. They manage local affairs and ensure the smooth operation of their trade hubs.   7. Coin Priests/Coin Knights: Serving at the city level, Coin Priests conduct religious services and ceremonies, while Coin Knights serve as guardians of the temples and enforcers of church law.   8. Trade Masters: Leaders of individual guilds or businesses within the towns and cities. They ensure their business is conducted in accordance with the teachings of Waukeen.   9. Coin Deacons/Coin Squires: Lowest clergy rank, assist in conducting religious services. Coin Squires are trainees serving under Coin Knights.   10. Citizens: Ordinary inhabitants of Tenarius, these people work in various trades and professions, contributing to the prosperity of the nation.   Each level of this hierarchy is bound by the teachings of the Church of Waukeen and the laws of Tenarius, but also has its own duties and responsibilities.

Culture

1. Mercantilism: The backbone of Tenarian culture is trade. Markets are the lifeblood of society, with trading and negotiation considered as art forms. Successful traders hold high societal status, which sometimes leads to ruthless competition and unscrupulous practices. While the dream of "rags to riches" is alive, it can breed greed and deception.   2. Spiritual Commerce: Waukeen's reverence has given birth to a unique spiritual culture intricately tied to commerce. Offerings, rituals, and ceremonies often symbolize trade, prosperity, and new business ventures. However, this can also lead to the commodification of religious practices, where wealth and offerings are seen as a direct path to spiritual merit.   3. Hierarchical Society: Society is hierarchical, with the merchant class wielding significant power. While upward mobility through trade success is possible, the system can also be manipulated. Those with existing wealth have disproportionate influence, and can use it to tip the scales of justice in their favor, leading to a disparity of power.   4. Law and Disorder: While Tenarius prides itself on its strong rule of law, focusing on contract law, property rights, and commercial disputes, the system is not infallible. Tax evasion, fraudulent contracts, and illegal monopolies are common issues. The sanctity of legal agreements, sealed by Waukeen's ritual, is sometimes overshadowed by greed and ambition.   These nuanced cultural aspects paint a picture of a society that's vibrant and rich in opportunities, but also rife with the challenges that wealth and power can bring. In Tenarius, the marketplaces are filled with as much ambition and hope as they are with corruption and deceit, creating a dynamic and complex societal fabric.

Public Agenda

Tenarius, a mercantile powerhouse, has its gaze focused on broadening its economic dominance and securing its place as the new titan within Sorashana. Its public agenda is defined by the following goals   1. Economic Expansion: Tenarius aims to leverage its thriving markets, skilled workforce, and extensive trade networks to secure dominance in regional and global commerce. The government encourages entrepreneurship and innovation, with the goal of fostering economic growth that not only benefits Tenarius but also solidifies its influence on the international stage.   2. Diplomatic Maneuvering: Having emerged as a victor alongside the Undertow Union in the Sorashanan War, Tenarius seeks to maintain its strategic alliances, even if it means balancing a strained relationship with Accordia, Khazadthur, and Tuetoenia. They see the value in keeping the peace, but not at the expense of their newfound stature and interests.   3. Defense and Security: Tenarius acknowledges the potential threats that come with its rising power and prominence. Therefore, strengthening national defense and enhancing internal security form key aspects of their public agenda. The country has started investing in bolstering its military might and is keen to develop advanced defense technologies.   4. Restoring Internal Harmony: The government is also cognizant of the internal issues plaguing Tenarius - from tax evasion to deep-seated corruption. While these problems may seem less urgent than international politics, there is a growing consensus that they cannot be ignored. Efforts are underway to enforce stricter laws and establish fairer trade practices to create a more equitable society.   Despite its robust economy and military strength, Tenarius understands that it must navigate the post-war landscape with care. The country seeks to consolidate its gains, rectify its shortcomings, and build strong alliances, all while maintaining a delicate balance of power within Sorashana.

History

383 I.B. - Independence Day: Tenarius gains its independence from the Pride Kingdoms during the height of the Sorashanan War, marking a shift in the country's history. Adamiel Bartholemæus Tamariel von Hinan Tenarius, the leader and founder, buys the nation's freedom, establishing the Aristocratic Church of Waukeen as the main religious institution.   388 I.B. - The Emerald Decree: Adamiel the First introduces the Emerald Decree, a comprehensive set of economic reforms aimed at promoting mercantile trade and boosting the country's economy. These reforms contribute to the establishment of Tenarius as a prosperous trade nation.   394 I.B. - The Great Famine: A famine hits Tenarius, lasting two years and significantly impacting the population. Despite the difficulties, this crisis leads to the implementation of better agricultural policies and an improved system for food storage and distribution.   402 I.B. - A New Reign: Adamiel the First passes away after a prolonged illness, and the reign is passed on to his son, Adamiel the Second. The country mourns the loss of its founder and welcomes its new leader with mixed feelings, considering the legacy of the first ruler. The same year, Theressa, Adamiel's mother, dies from alcohol poisoning, further rocking the nation.   405 I.B. - The Star of Tenarius: The monumental Star of Tenarius is completed, solidifying the country's religious authority in Sorashana. This grand structure is seen as a testament to the nation's devotion to Waukeen, becoming an iconic symbol of its spiritual and political power.   407 I.B. - The Great Tax Reform: In response to widespread tax evasion, Adamiel the Second introduces The Great Tax Reform, aiming to create a fairer taxation system and crack down on financial corruption. This move meets with resistance from some sections of society, leading to civil unrest in parts of the country.   408 I.B. - Present Day: Under the rule of Adamiel the Second, Tenarius continues to navigate its path, balancing its commitment to its citizens, economic aspirations, and international relations. The nation stands strong, striving to honor its past and shape its future.

Demography and Population

Tamariel: As the capital city, it holds the largest portion of the population with around 35% of the total population. The city's birth rate is slightly above the national average, due to better healthcare facilities and opportunities. The death rate is around the national average.   Kasamond Region (including Castle Kasrann, Kasaldan, and Kaynin): This militaristic region, due to its proximity to Accordia, hosts approximately 25% of the nation's population. The region's birth rate is marginally lower due to its harsher living conditions and occasional military conflicts, while its death rate is slightly above average.   Barthol: This port city holds around 20% of the nation's population. Being a city of enjoyment and economic opportunity, it attracts younger demographics contributing to a higher birth rate, while its death rate aligns with the national average.   Nazlandia: This vast region holds approximately 15% of the population. Its birth and death rates closely match the national average, although there's a slightly higher death rate due to the hazardous work conditions in the lumber mills.   The Coven: The Coven, being the least populous area, holds only about 5% of the population. Given its mysterious and potentially dangerous nature, its birth and death rates are both slightly above the national average.   The average birth rate in Tenarius is approximately 18 births per 1000 people per year, while the average death rate is around 9 deaths per 1000 people per year. These numbers reflect the nation's steady growth and relative stability. Please note that these figures may vary slightly due to unforeseen circumstances such as war, disease, or natural disasters.

Religion

In Tenarius, there is a rich tapestry of religions practiced among the populace. While the Waukeen Church, dedicated to Waukeen, the deity of wealth and prosperity, is the state religion and holds significant power, there is a diverse array of faiths that coexist alongside it.

Kabal of Seven

Despite the Waukeen Church's dominance, the Kabal of Seven holds an allure for a substantial segment of the population. This religion worships the Seven Demon Lords of Gehenna, an act considered heresy by most other faiths. However, it has persisted due to desperation, mystery, and the sense of forbidden allure it presents. While demon worship is largely frowned upon and kept hidden, the influence of this cult is undeniable.

Mammon Sect

The Mammon Sect of the Kabal worships Mammon, the Blind God and the demon lord of greed. Formerly known as Mammon the Golden Sentinel, he was an Empyrean who protected Waukeen. However, after a failed attempt to protect his charge by destroying the layer of greed, he was ensnared and corrupted. This connection leads many Mammon followers to believe they can earn favor by tormenting Waukeen.

Lucifer Sect

The followers of Lucifer, the Tyrant Among Fire and Demon Lord of Envy, hold sway among certain pockets of the populace. The tale of Lucifer, once a celestial being and a god of light, holds a certain fascination. His temptation into demonhood and the resulting fall is a story that resonates with many, leading to a quiet but persistent following.

Iblis Sect

Some citizens are drawn to the defiance and power symbolized by Iblis, the demon lord of pride. Once a revered Shastra warrior among the Raksharai people, Iblis's brash personality and refusal to be controlled attract followers who resonate with these values.

Baron La Croix

Finally, a small but devout group adheres to the teachings of Baron La Croix, the Bookkeeper, one of the Loa spirits. Known for his embodiment of excess, La Croix's insatiable desire for more attracts those who seek prosperity and abundance. His belief in the power of excess resonates with those seeking a path to wealth and prosperity.   While these religions exist and have their followers, the power they hold is often covert and indirect, as the state primarily endorses the Waukeen Church. The laws and societal norms of Tenarius allow for the freedom of religion, but any faith that openly challenges the authority of the Waukeen Church or incites unrest or disorder is quickly repressed. Worship of the Demon Lords is not explicitly forbidden, but it is often kept under close surveillance, and any signs of potential harm or threat to the society are dealt with swiftly.

Foreign Relations

Positive Relations

Tuetoenia: This Southern and Eastern Sorashanian country, famous for its Druids of the Witched and their knowledge of extending life, maintains a friendly relationship with Tenarius. The mutual respect and shared interests between these nations foster their healthy relations.   Libertalia (Undertow Union): Libertalia, the technological powerhouse situated on the western coast of Eastrix, highly regards Tenarius. The Union views Tenarius as a brave nation that has dared to differentiate itself from the erstwhile Pride Kingdoms Coalition.   Prim Isla and Cabana Havana: These Southern Free Islands of Sorashana, a haven for outcasts from all walks of life, have a positive relationship with Tenarius. The shared understanding of freedom binds these nations together.

Negative Relations

Accordia: Centrally located in Sorashana, the empire of Accordia harbors resentment towards Tenarius. As the principal member of the Pride Kingdoms Coalition, Accordia feels betrayed by their former ally but is compelled to cooperate with Tenarius for the sake of maintaining political sovereignty and influence.   Zubia: The enigmatic, insular nation of Zubia, where the sun's heat pervades day and night, views Tenarius as a harbinger of conflict. Zubia believes that Tenarius's actions are likely to instigate disturbances in Sorashana.   Qanvana: Nestled in the northern expanses of Sorashana, the pacifistic nation of Qanvana distances itself from Tenarius. The Qanvanan perception of Tenarius is of a country blinded by worldly distractions, including wealth and political intrigue, which deviate from the path to true enlightenment.

Laws

In Tenarius, laws guide the conduct of its citizens and the operations of its institutions. These laws encompass various aspects of life and governance, including crime, property rights, employment, commerce, finance, taxation, and litigation, among others.
Creation and Documentation of Laws: The creation of laws is the responsibility of the Ecclesiastical Council. This council, comprised of leaders from influential families, religious figures, and Consul Valeria Galeria, convenes regularly to deliberate on new laws and amendments to existing ones. All laws are documented meticulously in the Divine Ledger, a sacred tome stored in the grand temple in Tamariel, the capital city. The Divine Ledger is a public record, but its handling is restricted to authorized priests and legal scholars.
Enforcement of Laws: The enforcement of laws is carried out by the Gold Shields, the national guard of Tenarius. They maintain order, apprehend lawbreakers, and uphold the societal rules. The Gold Shields operate under the command of a Grand Marshal, who answers directly to the Arch-Paladin and the Consul, ensuring the direct implementation of law enforcement from the highest level of authority.
Punishments: Punishments in Tenarius vary depending on the severity and nature of the crime. They can range from fines for minor offenses to imprisonment and forced labor for major crimes. Capital punishment is reserved for the most heinous crimes and is administered by the state after a thorough legal process.
Flexibility of Laws: While the laws of Tenarius are rigidly enforced, there is room for interpretation and flexibility. The Ecclesiastical Tribunal interprets the laws, providing clarifications on complex legal matters. This ensures that the spirit of Waukeen's teachings and the intent of the law is upheld, rather than a strict, literal interpretation.
Escapability of the Law: As in most societies, there is always a degree of escapability of the law due to corruption, privilege, or cunning. However, Tenarius, with its diligent Gold Shields and comprehensive legislative and judicial systems, strives to minimize such escapability and maintain justice. It's worth noting that the high regard for wealth and status can sometimes influence the severity of punishment, leading to perceived preferential treatment. However, such instances are generally frowned upon and efforts are made to curb them.
