Wellspring of Nations

The Wellspring of Nations was a series of revolutionary conflicts across Duurn from the 1100s to the 1200s CE that created the first nation-states and established some of the modern liberal republics. The revolutions were part of the decline of absolute monarchies in Duurn, though they failed to sweep away monarchism from much of the world.

History

In the 1100s, the concepts of the Age of Idealism spread across Duurn, particularly through Umbrak, Jideran, and Teshoya. There, a growing mercantile owning class was chafing against political systems dominated by the aristocracy. Industrialization fueld by early colonialism was shifting more and more of the population to dense urban centers, where the working poor were crowded together and forced into precarious and dangerous conditions. The concept of nationhood and liberal ideas were spreading. Eventually, the spark of revolution hit dry brush, and a wildfire spread across Duurn.

The Limits of Liberty

Despite proclaiming the values of liberty and equality, most of these early republicans limited their political advocacy to the propertied classes. In Tehant even after the First Tehanti Revolution, voting was restricted to landowners until 1296 CE. In many cases, the early republican ideologues expressed the fear that political enfranchisement for the lower classes would lead to political instability and the collapse of law. This was not universal, however. There was a broad array of beliefs within the spreading republican movement, including the "ultra-radicals" or "Fire-Starters," who became the ideological ancestors of modern Libertarianism.

Ideological Legacy

The ideological experimentations of the Wellspring of Nations provided the basis both for modern liberal repubicanism, as well as for early communist thinkers. Indeed, most modern ideologies can draw roots from the Wellspring of Nations in some way. Robierre Clement himself, considered the founder of republican socialism, grew up during the Lanpetian Revolution, and many of his early works are clearly influenced by his experiences. echelarists too, despite rejecting many of the liberal ideas of republicanism, would not exist without the framework of nationhood that spread through the revolutions.
