War of the Lion

The War of the Lion was a conflict in Kaisa, from 1099 to 1107 CE, sparked by dissatisfaction with the rule of Kaisa by the Karavasilis dynasty. The previous Stomma, Pelaga the Fourth, had been assassinated by the Tiporéa, land-owning nobles of the Gafinou Peninsula, because of her attempts to centralize the state. Her son, Mattos the Second, was only a teenager, and the war broke out shortly after his ascension to the throne.   The war lasted eight years and resulted in the execution of the sovereign and the creation of the Symvouli Tiporé to govern Kaisa. While Mattos the Second was killed, a branch of the Karavasilis family remained in power in Antiopa, which became an independent state after the war.   The conflict was given its name because of the family crest of the leader of the revolting Tiporéa, which included a lion.
