Vrachana Textile Strike
The Vrachana Textile Strike was a workers strike in the textile industry of Vrachana in 1341. The textile factories of Vrachana were notorious for awful conditions, and fires and other disasters were unfortunately common. On the 20th of the Month of Hope, 1341, a fire broke out in one of the factories in the dense industrial quarter of the city. Several blocks went up in flames, and almost two-hundred people died.
The union movement was comparatively weak in Vrachana because of violence connected to the White Terror. Attempts by the disconnected textile unions in the city to go on strike had almost universally ended with violence. However, many workers were desperate to fight the bosses, and a group of them approached the SEK for help, when other unions were afraid to take the risk.
Union organizers with the SEK, including Katina Sabani, and the group of textile workers that had approached them went to work in the city. Despite threats of violence and brawls with echelarists and hired thugs alike, they were able to pull together the textile unions in Vrachana to present a united front. They called for a strike, even joined by unions in other industries.
Ultimately, all of their demands were met, making the strike one of the most successful in years. As a result, the SEK had a major resurgence, especially in Vrachana. Shortly after the strike ended, Sabani was shot by a would-be-assassin, but she survived and left the city to continue her work with the SEK elsewhere.
