Mabo

Demographics

Mabo's population is small for a capital, but highly concentrated in influence. Most citizens are administrators, scholars, servants, artisans, and nobles tied directly to the Imperial Court. Families who trace their lineage to the city's founding still hold place and privilege here. A steady flow of diplomats, envoys, and traders expands the cultural mix, though they rarely stay long enough to be counted in official census records. Despite its size, Mabo feels dense because everyone who lives here serves a purpose within the empire's machinery.

Government

As the seat of the Cubria Empire, Mabo is governed by the Emperor/Empress. Beneath the throne, a layered bureaucracy handles lawmaking, taxation, foreign affairs, public administration, and archival work. The Halls district contains the Imperial Council chambers where high-ranking ministers assemble. While citizens enjoy relative stability, most major decisions are made behind closed doors. Authority flows downward in a rigid hierarchy, and loyalty to the Imperial House is expected in every profession.

Industry & Trade

Most economic activity centers around Smoke Fair, where artisans produce textiles, jewelry, cremonial clothing, and imperial regalia. Traders bring luxury goods from across South Chrysalis and beyond. While Mabo is too small for heavy industry, it excels in refined craft production, archival work, and administrative services. Its location makes it a hub for diplomatic traffic and high-value trade rather than mass commerce.

Infrastructure

Mabo's infrastructure reflects the empire's long-standing wealth and careful planning. Stone causeways connect the districts, aqueducts feed public fountains, and an underground tunnel system allows servants and guards to move discreetly between key buildings. Old Mabo still uses traditional cisterns and hand-dug channels, but newer districts rely on efficient water distribution and waste management systems that keep the compact city clean and orderly. Lantern posts like the main streets, creating a warm glow after dusk.

Because of its political importance, Mabo receives priority repairs and funding before any other settlement in the empire.

There's a lot of history here. Based on that, and the size of the country, one would think that the capital would be bigger than the 2k residents that live there. I surely thought it would be bigger than Marnocete, the capital of my lovely country, not smaller. But who am I to say how large a capital should be. Marnocete only has 1k population over Mabo. So, who am I to judge? Besides, if I judged, I would miss out on a lot of things. It would be cool to explore Mabo, especially the Old Mabo District.
