Dueling - Basics

Duels : The Basics

Overview

A Challenge is a formal declaration of combat between two individuals on K'lais. Any person regardless of age, position/rank, or social standing may issue a Challenge. Anyone of any age can issue a Challenge. Children not Of Age do not use bladed weapons for Challenges. They are given padded weapons or foam weapons and allowed to Duel.

Disclaimer: Generally, children simply fight using hand-to-hand combat.

Challenges by Age

Children

Children who are not Of Age are permitted to issue and accept Challenges; however, lethal force is strictly prohibited.

  • Weapons: padded or foam variants only
  • Outcome: treated as valid Challenges but never lethal or weapon-based

Adults

Adults may use bladed weapons or any melee weapon. Sparring weapons are permissible. The Military High Command has ordered that Duels for those on duty with the Police Service use sparring weapons (non-lethal, but still capable of damage). Duels may be issued and arranged to be done at a later time, if those involved wish to use lethal weapons.

Oversight & Legitimacy

A Duel must be overseen by an individual who is knowledgeable in:

  • The Irrefutable Rules
  • The Rules of Dueling

Anyone meeting this requirement may act as an overseer. Their primary role is to ensure proper conduct and record the Duel.

Recording Requirements

All official Duels must be recorded and submitted to the appropriate authorities. The responsibility of review falls to:

  • The Master of Ceremonies of the district
  • Appointed overseers

These officials confirm that the Duel followed protocol, acknowledged as official, recorded and submitted within 24 hours of the Duel occuring.

Arena Duels

Duels held in established arenas are always recorded and automatically considered official.

Battlecruiser Duels

Any Duel conducted aboard K'laisian battlecruisers is inherently official, regardless of context.

Unofficial Duels

A Challenge does not require an official Duel. If both participants agree, the Duel may be declared unofficial.

  • Not recorded
  • Not submitted within 24 hours of the Duel
  • Any deaths incured during an unofficial Duel are considered murder

Unofficial Duels allow for personal resolution without being entered into formal record.
