Godrick 'Cleaver' Gabranth

Godrick Gabranth (a.k.a. Cleaver)

Father of Kyle's character. Scion of the Gabranth family. Master marksman. Werevulture. Part of the Thousand Beast Pirates.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Godrick grew up in the oppressive Gabranth household located on Pangea. There, he studied under brutal conditions the art of gunsmithing, politicking, business and other crafts, being raised as the inheritor to the family business, Gabranth & Son's, a weapons dealership with close ties to the New World Trading Company. Once he inherited the role of company head, he would forever be under the watchful gaze of Shardeer, the company's founder.    It was a cruel childhood, marked by extreme pressure and familial neglect. Even so, young Godrick developed a prodigious skill with gun craft, outperforming trained naval officers in the art of marksmanship from age 10. Despite meeting and exceeding all expectations, Godrick resented his family and the conditions they put him through. He rejected his birthright and stole away in the dead of night, seeking to become a powerful pirate and to one day return, burning Gabranth & Sons to the ground.   Godrick's quick wit, charm, and deadly skill with a pistol made finding a crew an easy task for him. He set about building up a name for himself, gaining notoriety and power all the while. In a few short years, it seemed that his dream of destroying his own family would soon be a reality. His brutality earned him a nickname - Cleaver Gabranth - for the brutal state he left enemies and mutineers in. He personally disliked the nickname, believing that he was far too precise and surgical to be named after something as clumsy and imperfect as a butcher's knife. Whilst sailing the New World, he also met and battled Ritumi Sorua, the future greatest swordsman alive, and the two formed a rivalry based on their different philosophies when it came to fighting.   It was not to last, however. Eventually, Godrick came up against an opponent he couldn't beat - the shapeshifting future Pirate Lord Jira and his crew of lycanthropic monsters. Godrick and his crew were beaten quickly and thoroughly. They never stood a chance. It was then that Godrick realised his dream had been for nought. If he couldn't beat one shapeshifting brute, how could he ever hope to overthrow an immortal genius like Shardeer? At that moment, Godrick knew true fear, the fear of dying having totally wasted his life. Desperate to save himself, he surrendered himself to Jira, joining the Thousand Beast Pirates.   After serving loyally (if dispassionately) under Jira for a few years, Godrick came across an idea that reinvigorated him inspired by the infamous death of Edward Newgate - an event that shook the foundations of the world. If he could never hope to literally destroy the Gabranth family, he could still destroy it by creating a lineage even greater than the Gabranth's. Taking shore leave, he set about creating an heir that would be so powerful as to turn the world on its head.   After many failed attempts to create powerful offspring, he eventually got what he wanted - twin children from a tabaxi conceived during an eclipse. It was said that eclipse tabaxi are the rarest and most powerful of all tabaxi. Having gotten the children he wanted, he then set about raising them to be tough and driven. In abusing them, he sought to light a spark in them, a burning hatred for Godrick that would drive them to one day do great things.   Part of this hope was dashed when Leyana, his daughter, was caught having an affair with a man with which Godrick had not approved. Furious at the idea of not being able to control his lineage, Godrick saw fit to cut his losses and focus on Vallar, his son. He beat Leyana to the point of putting her into a coma, then left to sail into the New World to rejoin Jira, confident his young son would take up arms and chase after him in revenge.   Shortly after returning to Jira, he contracted lycanthropy, turning him into a werevulture.

Morality & Philosophy

Godrick believes in progress and securing a legacy. To this end, when a man fights, he must use every advantage he can get to kill his opponent and secure his own future. He believes that guns are the next step in combat and that anyone still insisting on using swords is a romantic fool that insists on using an outdated form of combat.   He is a practically-minded man and believes that concepts like dreams, moral philosophies and destiny are for hopeless fools too naive to understand how the world really works. Although he admires the impact that Newgate's death had on the world, he believes that Newgate was a charlatan that tricked the world into entering a pirate age by lying about leaving treasure somewhere. The notion that somewhere out there lies a treasure that can make one's greatest desires come true is a ludicrous idea.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Having been raised in the smothering shadow of his ancestor, Shadreer Gabranth, Godrick desires nothing more than to see the old Gabranth Legacy burn. Although in his youth he sought out a means to destroy his family patriarch, he quickly came to the conclusion that his dream was impossible, and pursuing it would only get him killed.   After this dejection, a new motivation began to form. If he couldn't destroy his past, he could instead start a new legacy that vastly overshadows his ancestor's. He desperately craves leaving something behind that'll cement his name in all of history. He uses his ancestral surname as a springboard to create a new Gabranth lineage. If having descendants who manage to rewrite history means his death, even at the hands of said descendants, then so be it.
