Scania

Scania is the southernmost nation of Nineveh, a land of towering mountain ranges, flat frozen plains, and relentless winds from the icy southern seas. Its people endure long winters and thrive on innovation, becoming the most technologically advanced nation in Nineveh with the invention of steam powered and clockwork machinery. The capital, Felldion, is the heart of Scania, while its mining and farming villages remain poor and isolated, visited only by Crown’s Guards and wandering adventurers.

Structure

Scania is ruled by King Ronald Ambers VIII, a benevolent monarch whose word is final despite guidance from a circle of nobles. His rule maintains stability across the nation, with Felldion serving as the central hub for politics, technology, and trade. The Crown’s Guard ensures security in Felldion and larger towns, while villages receive only minimal protection.

Culture

Scanian culture is hardy and communal, with feasts, drinking, and shared warmth serving as the people’s escape from the cold. Strength, ingenuity, and resilience are celebrated virtues, and most view technological advancement as the truest measure of progress. Though friendly toward outsiders, Scanians tend to find other nations, especially Jascana, overly soft and naive.

Public Agenda

Scania is focused on advancing its steam and clockwork technology to strengthen its infrastructure, military, and economy. Felldion’s guilds and inventors drive most national progress, aiming to supply machines, armor, and weapons not only to Scania but across Nineveh.

Assets

  • Steam-powered engines and clockwork technology
  • The Scanian Train System connecting major towns to Felldion

History

Scania was founded 955 years ago alongside Nineveh’s other nations after the War, its borders shaped by Udos, god of Time, to align with its mountain ranges. Udos wished for Scania to remain a land of cold, where the people and creatures alike would be hardened by their environment. Since then, the Ambers dynasty has ruled, with Felldion growing into Nineveh’s largest city and technological hub, while its harsh climate has kept much of Scania untamed and dangerous.

Demography and Population

Scania’s population is spread thin, with most of its 561,000 citizens concentrated in Felldion. Humans make up the majority, with dwarves and goliaths commonly found in the mountains.

Territories

Scania is dominated by the Churburg Mountain Range, vast frozen plains, and sheer stone cliffs along its southern coast. Most settlements cluster near mining hubs or along the train routes leading back to Felldion.

Military

The Felldion Crowns Guard serves as Scania’s primary fighting force, highly disciplined and equipped with steam-powered enhancements and advanced weaponry. Villages rely on local militias for additional protection.

Technological Level

Scania leads Baltharos in steam and clockwork innovation, supplying much of Nineveh with mechanical advancements. While magic is present, technology is the nation’s defining strength.

Foreign Relations

Scania trades primarily with Trodan and Selatres for food and drink, supplying machines and metals in return. While relations with Jascana are peaceful, Scanians see their openness as excessive, and there remains mild hostility with Kleumizura.

Laws

  • Worship of Udos, god of Time is near-universal, with failure to do so viewed as highly suspicious.
  • Unauthorized use of Felldion’s technology or machinery is punishable by confiscation or imprisonment.
  • All mining operations are licensed and taxed by the crown.
  • Crown’s Guard has full authority throughout Scania, with no exceptions.

Agriculture & Industry

Agriculture is sparse, limited to hardy crops and imported goods. Industry focuses on mining, refining metals, and producing steam and clockwork devices for domestic use and export.

Trade & Transport

The Scanian Train System connects major towns to Felldion, serving as the backbone of trade and transport. Scania’s exports of machines, metals, and weapons fuel much of Nineveh’s demand, while imports primarily include wheat, meat, wine, and liquor.

Education

Felldion offers the most comprehensive education, with its two upper city rings housing schools and the prestigious Felldion Academy. Education is scarce in lower Felldion and nearly nonexistent in small villages.

Infrastructure

Scania boasts advanced infrastructure for Nineveh, including widespread plumbing, sewage systems, and a functional rail network. Most villages remain rudimentary, with basic roads and minimal amenities.
