Queen Ulitakanara (Phesteros is her last name, at one point she said her middle initial is "C")(a.k.a. The One with the Eyes of Ice)
Ulita couldn't die. No matter what her family did, she just kept on living, even when the others tore themselves apart in their search for power--and their quest to get rid of her. She was the one with the eyes of ice. And she just couldn't die.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Ulita is in fair physical condition, with no abnormalties or illnesses. She is unusually small for her age but this doesn't stop her. She will most definitely kill you if you comment on her size, so beware.
Body Features
Ulita has pale, white skin and long, lavender hair. She is relatively short for her age and has a small, skinny frame. Her fingernails are filed to a point. Her skin tends to get flushed and red when she's exposed to extreme sunlight due to the fact that she spent almost all her life in an icy cave.
Facial Features
Ulita has a heart-shaped face with thin, pencil eyebrows and a small, pinched mouth. Her eyes are a little farther apart than usual and her nose is small and delicate. See below for more detail.
Identifying Characteristics
She has a purple scar that runs across the left side of her jaw, though she is ashamed of it and usually covers it up. This itself is an identifying feature, as Ulita is almost never seen without her scarf covering her face. Although she is only nine, she has a plethora of dragon tattoos across her back in blue ink.
Physical quirks
Ulita is left-handed and walks with a purpose. All steps she takes are unusually exaggerated, as if she's trying to make up for the lack of "length" in her legs. Her eyelashes are unevenly grown in and have been since birth.
Special abilities
Ulitakanara is amazingly talented with swords of any kind (as you probably know by now). She's so good, she can take down a team of five, professional assassins blindfolded using her non-dominant hand. Ulita's definitely one of the best fighters in the world.
Apparel & Accessories
Ulita constantly wears a light blue, wool scarf that is insulated by Wvvelt fur on the inside. She wears a white shirt that fits her snugly and a pair of black, cotton pants. Her sheath is made of steel and drags on the ground because it's too long for her.
Specialized Equipment
Ulita's weapon is a four-feet long sabre with a dark grey blade, a black tip, and black, leather stripes alone the hilt. It is made from the same material as Tantemtalem's blade. Her armor is made out of reinforced steel and has the Callistian logo and the Citraidarian logo on its front. She still wears her scarf with the armor and only takes it off to sleep.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Ulitakanara was born on Tiri 3, 264 on the frigid island kingdom of Callistia. Her parents were the king and queen of the Empire there; she was the second youngest of four (she had an older brother-9, an older sister-4, then the youngest, a brother who died of Blackwood fever at age two and a half). Her parents did not care for her because they did not believe that she would rise to the throne in her lifetime. She was neglected and left to play with her cruel, older sister for hours on end, but she still got better treatment than the people of Callistia. She was tutored until age four in the combat, science, mathematics, music, diplomacy, and reading, though to little amounts (the Callistian Empire cared little about education, but Ulita's parents thought that an educated girl was better than nothing).
Her punk brother, Dunvel, killed her mother and sister when Ulita was two in an attempt to seize early control of the throne. He tried to kill her and her father as well, but they escaped (baby Ulitakanara even cut his arm open in the process)!
Gender Identity
Ulita is cisgender.
Sexuality
Ulita is straight.
Education
Ulitakanara was personally trained by two of the Callistian Empire's top tutors (she eventually poisoned them because she got bad grades on everything except combat) until she was four. She then proceeded to train herself in the art of combat and stealth for about a year. She is now currenly training at CTAAC and is on her fourth year.
Accomplishments & Achievements
When she was seven, she killed her father in a brutal combat over the Callistian throne and won control. She became the youngest, most accomplished fighter in the land and gained quite a name for herself. As leader, she directed troops to aid The Battlemaster Empire. When she arrived at The Citadel, she quickly rose up the ranks and joined the most talented combat group in CTAAC, consisting of Meeiuwaan and Rᴂlin at that time.
Failures & Embarrassments
Until she was three, Ulita was slow and clumsy in pretty much everything (except sword-fighting, of course). Despite being the heir to the Callistian throne (after her brother), many people thought that she wasn't going to amount to anything, except maybe a good foot soldier. Several times, people tried to assassinate her so that the next in line, baby Louvix, would assume power after her brother. However, they all failed and that's when her instincts kicked in.
"After she personally strangled the assasin who was sent to kill her at age four and had his corpse hung on the flagpole overlooking the kingdom, the attempts on her life stopped." - Mavre Yossanen, scribe to the Callistian monarch during Ulita's childhood
Mental Trauma
Ulita was mentally traumatized at age two when she watched her older brother push her mother and sister into a lake and drown them. Then he tried to kill Ulita and her father, but they slipped away and Ulita slashed his arm in the process of escaping, permanently scarring him. She often has nightmares of a shadowy figure shaped like her mother hovering over her with a sabre poised above her head.
Morality & Philosophy
Her morality is somewhat strange, having been put to the test many times. She does not have any problem killing people or animals herself, yet tends to scare easily when it comes to other people killing each other.
"Nature documentaries are my mortal enemy. Who can stand watching all those fuzzy creatures devour and kill each other?!" -Ulita, Cat in the City
She is not very scientific or philisophical, but is cold and calculating in her manner. Ulita's tutoring did not include a large amount of science, except for basic astronomical and chemical training (ex. the sun is not a planet). She believes in "stab first, ask questions later". Though she is smart and intelligent for her age, she does not spend a lot of time doing philisophical thinking, as she usually spends her time fighting, training, whittling, or sleeping.
Taboos
She believes strictly in the ancient code of sword-fighting and hates anyone who dares to break it. Some examples may include giving up out of kindness, not using the ancient fighting style, refusing to accept a duel/challenge...etc. Unfortunately, she is forced to break these rules a lotin the book.
Personality Characteristics
Motivation
Ulita "secretly" aspires to take over the world, though not in a very serious manner. She wishes to avenge her mother's wrongful death (and her sister's too) and kill her brother. Then, who knows? Maybe she'll retake control of the Callistian Empire and form an alliance with the Citraidarian Empire!
Savvies & Ineptitudes
As you already know by now, she's a genius when it comes to sword-fighting. She's good at whittling (she can make a dragon out of a wood block in a few hours) and is quick to learn other skills that involve her hands or other physical interactions. However, she's pretty bad at making small talk, lying (she was always taught to be frank with everyone), and other social interactions.
Likes & Dislikes
Her favorite colors are blue, violet, and white. Her favorite food is raw turkey (?) and her favorite animal is "the one that has lots of medicinal purposes but is weak and easy to kill". Her least favorite color is pink, her least favorite food is pasta, and her least favorite animal is the mosquito.
Virtues & Personality perks
Ulita is patient (in a sort of strange, passive-agressive way) and very talented at her job, which is basically fighting and killing people.
Vices & Personality flaws
Ulita is easily angered, though her anger is cooler and usually comes in short bursts of passion (ex. cold stares, not talking to anyone, etc). She secretly believes that she is the best fighter in the world a feels the tiniest sense of superiority towards those who cannot wield a sword and those who are cowards.
Personality Quirks
Her nose twitches when she's angry.
Hygiene
Ulita's views on hygiene are unclear, though she isn't the sort of person who slouches and leaves things lying around in strange places (or is lazy in general). She bathes once every other day on average. During one deleted scene in the book, Ulita comments disdainfully on the disorder of the Castle, shuddering as a large, hairy bug crawls across her path (she then proceeds to stomp on it multiple times and smear its guts all over the floor).
Social
Religious Views
Ulitakanara used to believe in the religious views of her Empire, but now she worships the gods and goddesses of The Citraidarian Empire's religion, though not very adamantly. She respects the work that the priests and priestesses do at the Citadel and has shown an interest in learning their trade, but only to "learn more about the medicinal and/or negative effects of certain spices and incenses that might give me an advantage in combat." Not that she needs another advantage...
Social Aptitude
She retains a sophisticated, yet calculating and mysterious manner when she's around other people, especially strangers. She doesn't talk much and spends most of her time evaluating the countless blunders of whoever's nearby, taking mental notes and exploiting their weaknesses. Her ego is relatively small, though she takes pride in talking about her skill level. Not very charismatic though; she tends to only puzzle the person she's trying to talk to, rather than charm.
Mannerisms
Ulita tends to stand ramrod-straight while she's talking and stare the other right in the eye, with her head cocked to one side. She usually approaches people from behind/the side (an old, stealthy, combat habit she can't get rid of) when she wants to talk to them (which is rare).
Hobbies & Pets
When Ulita was five, she had a pet Wvvelt named Hvakut. She would sic him on all who displeased her and have him bite off their nose. Unfortunately, she often forgot to feed him, which ultimately led to his demise when she was six. Ulita apparently wasn't that traumatized because she immediatly had him skinned and turned into a furry insulator, which lines the inside of her favorite scarf. Ulita's hobbies include combat, whittling (as prescribed by the mental health doctor), kicking things, singing, and absolutely TERRIFYING people.
Speech
Ulita is very quiet and soft-spoken, despite her cold, calculating manner. Her voice is low, rumbly and "fairy-like", as Tantemtalem puts it.
"Tantemtalem? She's a friend of mine, yes. Perhaps not the most talented fighter, but her powers are beyond what I've ever seen and her courage is admirable, to say the least." -Ulitakanara
Ulita is perhaps the scariest person I know. But in a cool way." -Tantemtalem
Nicknames & Petnames
Ulitakanara is not one for nicknames, though she did eventually adopt Meeiuwaan's pet name for Tantemtalem, Cat, later on. Tantemtalem has no nicknames for Ulita.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
They're both dedicated to sword-fighting and are constantly honing their talents. They rarely train together, but when they do, Ulita always wins in ten seconds or less. Tantemtalem once tried to learn whittling, but Ulita wasn't very good at teaching it, so she gave up.
Shared Secrets
Tantemtalem, knowing that Ulita could keep a secret, told her about the mysterious dreams she'd been having before anyone else.
even before Ra turns traitor. This may just be Ulita being weird and cold as usual, or maybe she knew something the others didn't and just never told anybody. Who knows?
Shared Acquaintances
They share the same basic friend group. Ra once visited the Callistian Empire as a young child and saw a banner of Ulita's family.
"Meew? She's not bad...she has a warrior's strength, courage, and is very good with a sword. I like her." - Ulita
"At first, I was scared of Ulita, but deep inside, she wouldn't hurt a fly. Well...I take that back. She is kind of scary...but in a cool way." -Meew
Nicknames & Petnames
Meew, always the teasing one, sometimes calls Ulita "Ice Girl", though the recipient of this title does not appreciate it and often threatens Meew with her sword. It's all in good fun, though! Mostly...
Commonalities & Shared Interests
They're both warriors at heart, although Ulita is more serious about her work--and better at it. They're often seen practicing together, though the spars don't last long.
Shared Secrets
Ulita, knowing that Meew was a tough warrior like her, told Meew first about her traumatic background.
"Xeni's kinda cute, yeah. He can't wield a sword to save his life, but I respect him for his honesty and optimism. Respect is the key word here...why are you laughing?!" -Ulita
"Wicked with a sword, stronger than a raging Wvvelt, insanely smart, and a little scary. All qualities I respect in a girl.
Why are you laughing???!" -Xeni
Nicknames & Petnames
They have no personal nicknames for each other, though Xeni did once suggest to the whole group that they should call Ulita "The Queen of Icy Glares and Swashbuckling". It didn't stick for very long.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
It's possible that they both have a shared interest in each other. Hint hint. *eyebrow raise*
Shared Acquaintances
They share the same basic friend group.
Legal Status
Not married
Wealth & Financial state
Come on, guys, she's technically the queen of Callistia! Although she did betray/leave them...
Including all the loot she stole from her enemies plus the "small" fortune she took, Ulita's worth about $2.3M in US money.
Ulitakanara's Music (credit to rollforfantasy.com)
Ulita was originally going to be a shy, kind sprite who arrived at The Citadel right after Tantemtalem did, became Xeni's girlfriend, and was just kind of nice in general. Her past was mysterious and never explained, though it was clear that she'd had some sort of trauma in her early life.
