Ragsnik

The mystery inside a mystery

Inspired by The Secret D

Ragsnik (last name unknown) (a.k.a. King of the Forest or The Apprentice)

Ragsnik stands alone, waiting and watching. His lavender eyes sparkle in the moonlight and his ivory hair flutters softly in the breeze. An obsidian scimitar hangs at his side, gleaming and reflecting the rushing water below. "It is time," he mutters to himself, and can't help but smile as he turns and walks away into the shadows of the forest.

Physical Description

Body Features

Ragsnik has pale skin and a tall, lanky figure, just like Tantemtalem.

Facial Features

Ragsnik has a small, pale face with a pointy chin and a button nose. His eyes are lavender with hints of teal in them, and two of his teeth are pointed like fangs. Ragsnik's hair is ivory white, short, and spiky. It goes down to just above his shoulders.

Identifying Characteristics

One lock of his ivory hair is much longer than the rest and curls down like a "soup ladle" (as called in the story) over his face.

Physical quirks

Ragsnik is left handed and tends to arch his back a little when he's walking.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

He grew up in Astor and at the age of 9 was recruited to be a shipmaster's apprentice for the Callistian Empire. But he was constantly mistreated by the shipmaster and the other (mean) apprentice, so he ran away and found the Hermit's tree, where the Hermit took him in and taught him forest magic as well as combat.

When Tantemtalem and her friends arrived at the tree seeking the shimkar (a weapon), Ragsnik stayed out of sight and watched as the Hermit tested them and as they won the challenge. When they left, he followed them and saw Ra betray the group. He popped out and used his most powerful magic blast to try and deter her, but accidentally turned her into the Shadow. Ra slunk away and Ragsnik joined the group.   Along the way, he proved to be a good fighter and an expert in wilderness survival/forest magic. He also began to fall in love with Tantemtalem.   But on the stolen ship to the island of Arca, when Ulita spotted a ferry that was being attacked, Ragsnik did nothing to save the drowning passengers. Meew saw that her mother was on the ferry and jumped overboard to try and save her. Tantemtalem furiously battled with Ragsnik over control of the ship but he won and refused to turn back, saying that "we must stay focused. No time to dawdle saving civilians; we have a limited amount of time to get this done." Tantemtalem, pleading that "Meew might die if you don't turn back," knocked him down in one last effort, but while they were struggling, they failed to notice a large wave (they're in a storm) rising behind them. The wave came crashing down and washed them overboard. In a panic, they all swam towards different points on the island and passed out on the shore.   When he woke up, Ragsnik was on a rocky beach with Tantemtalem as his neighbor. The wreck scattered them to different parts of the island and they had no idea where the others are (or whether they survived).

Gender Identity

Ragsnik is cisgender.

Sexuality

Ragsnik identifies as straight.

Education

Ragsnik has around one year of apprenticeship as a shipmaster and four years of apprenticeship as a forest warlock.

Employment

Ragsnik is an apprentice to the Hermit in the study of forest magic. After the main plot to the book ends, he returns to the Citadel with Tantemtalem to study combat at CTAAC.

Mental Trauma

He is frightened of disappointing the Hermit, who has always been so kind to him that he feels in great debt.

Morality & Philosophy

He generally believes that people must focus on the task at hand instead of wasting time doing side jobs.
Show spoiler
When sailing the ship during the passage to Arca, he wrestles with Tantemtalem over command of the ship because he doesn't want to take a detour to help a ship struggling in the storm.
