Balor
Until the last decade, Balor has been a mysterious landscape obscured by its sheer cliffs and the Domed Barrier that had prevented any two way travel or reliable observation. Adding to the mystery, it has been known for nearly a century now that the entire, massive island is artificially created.
While the Domed Barrier has fallen, many questions still remain about the island's unusual existence. The barrier's origin was never discovered, nothing exists indicating how it fell, and no clues have been unearthed as to how the island was raised.
Balor exists now as a place out of touch with the rest of the world. Unique life, strange landscapes, and the presence of sentient life once thought to be extinct have made Balor a beautiful and exquisite place. Deterring many from experiencing this wonderful land is the population. Though several kingdoms of a diverse range of sentients exist, they're unadvanced, iron-age cultures turn away many, viewing it as backwater and filthy.
Geography
Balor's most striking feature is the ring of mountains that shield it from the outside world. A deep bowl like shape has a central lake that holds the majority of the islands fresh water.
Generally, the western and southern regions collect all the rain water that comes over the mountains. Few clouds ever grow enough to rain down on the east, instead dying against the mountains and feeding the landscapes with surface runoff. In the winters, the northern band gets more moisture, feeding the forests that cover nearly a third of the terrain.
Fauna & Flora
Balor is consider a rich source of scientific discoveries for ecologists. The island is a landscape that has been physically cut off from the rest of the world. Combined with the naturally rich sources of arcane energy present in the numerous wells present across the landmass, the ecology has become the most unique in the world. Extinct species, or those close related to extinct species, coexist with more modern species that
Natural Resources
Balor, as a whole, has gather a lot of political attention due to the high levels of precious metals found close to the surface. Balor's native excavation techniques and technology level had not advanced enough to utilize most of these resources. Many of the nations of the world have started bickering over who should help Balor "utilize" the resources they have.
