Free Akreyan City-States
The Free Akreyan City-States consisted of three large Akreyan cities in Middland, namely Kyrenath, Selvaryth, and Arenval. They were founded shortly after the Akreyans immigrated to Middland several hundred years ago, after leaving their home continent of Alvanor following the destruction of their ancient Empire by the P'echtra.
The city-states were loosely connected politically and diplomatically, but each city-state governed itself and had its own legal and governmental system. Thanks to the ancient knowledge of the Akreyans, the cities flourished through trade, science, architecture, and culture. In the first hundred years, they were able to exert a great and positive influence on the founding of the Holy Empire of Middland and were integrated as a confederation of free imperial cities.
During the reign of Henry II. (Henry the Tyrant), the city-states came into conflict with the Emperor, whose goal was to expel non-human species and prevent them from further influencing the Empire. The Akreyans, like the Elfs, were a thorn in the Emperor's side, as he considered them a long-term threat. The cultural influence of the Akreyans was too great, their economic power and knowledge too strong, and above all, their superhuman lifespan made them dangerous in his opinion.
During the hostilities, accompanied by brutal massacres, pogromes and expulsions of non-human species, the cities were among the first to come under the focus of the Emperor's armies. On their own and seperated from each other, the Akreyan cities were unable to defend themselves against the armies of the Empire and were conquered and destroyed after many bloody battles and months of siege and starvation.
Many Akreyans were forced to flee to Garandor. Only a few remained in Middland and founded hidden and secret settlements, like Myravel. After the death of Henry II. and the accession of his son Henry III. (Henry the Good), the persecution of the Akreyans ceased and their population has been slowly recovering ever since. Though their influence and cultural height might never be the same as once.
