Battle of Saltport

The Conflict

Deployment

The forces of the Venecian Merchant Council deployed their troops at the western bank of the river with their archers in the first row. While the forces lead by Xander Schwabhausen took up position on the eastern bank of the river.

The Engagement

Xander Schwabhausen sent his cavalry through the narrow ford to run down House Arenburg's archers. But when the riders where about to hit the ranks of the archers, spearmen crouching behind and amongst the archers thrust their spears out to demount most of the attackers, who were then struck down by swift sword strikes.   When the last cavalrymen retreated back to to the eastern bank, the archers reopened fire on the infantry running through the river. The light infantry was quickly dealt with the skilled archers of House Arenburg and when the heavy infantry reached the western bank, the archers pulled back behind the venecian spear wall, that had formed in a semi circle.   Realizing that this battle can be won, Xander Schwabhausen sacrificed half of his heavy infantry to cover the retreat of the remainder of his army.

Outcome

Xander Schwabhausen retreats to Grenzburg and is besieged there.
