Waylan

Overview: Waylan is a sprawling and fertile region located in the southernmost reaches of Chernaya. Known for its rolling hills, lush grasslands, and extensive farmlands, Waylan serves as the primary agricultural center of the Kingdom. Despite its natural abundance, the region is marred by its turbulent history, particularly the brutal Border Wars with neighboring Duvik, and its current occupation by the Crown's forces. Waylan's people, many of whom are deeply resentful of the Crown's rule, live under the constant watch of the Regiment, with an undercurrent of rebellion simmering beneath the surface.   Geography and Environment: Waylan's rich, fertile soil making it ideal for farming. The landscape is dominated by rolling hills and expansive fields, dotted with small villages, towns, and hamlets. These settlements are interconnected by a network of winding paths and roads, many of which trace their origins back to the time before the Crown's conquest. The region’s mild climate and ample rainfall contribute to its agricultural productivity, making it the breadbasket of Chernaya.   History and Significance:
  • The Border Wars: Waylan’s history is deeply intertwined with the Border Wars, a series of brutal conflicts spanning decades with Duvik that ultimately led to Waylan’s subjugation by the Crown. These wars were marked by fierce resistance from Waylan’s inhabitants, who fought to maintain their independence against the encroaching forces of Chernaya. The wars left a lasting scar on the region, with many of its people still harboring a deep-seated animosity towards Sevgorod.
  • Conquest and Occupation: After being conquered by Chernaya, Waylan was integrated into the Kingdom, but its people never fully accepted their new rulers. The region remains a hotbed of dissent, with the Crown’s forces, particularly The Regiment, maintaining a heavy presence to suppress any signs of rebellion.
Culture and Society:
  • Resentment and Resistance: The people of Waylan are known for their strong sense of community and fierce independence. Despite the Crown’s efforts to impose control, Waylan remains culturally distinct, with many of its inhabitants holding onto their traditions and resisting assimilation. The presence of cartels, deeply rooted in the local communities, further complicates the Crown’s efforts to enforce its rule. These cartels often serve as the backbone of local resistance, providing support and resources to those who oppose the Crown.
  • Agricultural Hub: Waylan’s rich farmlands make it the primary source of food for the Kingdom of Chernaya. The region’s farmers produce a wide variety of crops, from grains and vegetables to fruits and livestock. The agricultural output of Waylan is crucial to the Kingdom’s survival, and the Crown relies heavily on the region’s resources to sustain Sevgorod's massive population and military forces.
Current Status: Under King Belgarion's reign, the tension between Waylan’s people and the Crown has reached new heights. The Regiment's presence is stronger than ever, with soldiers stationed throughout the region to keep the population in check. Despite this, Waylan remains defiant, with whispers of rebellion and resistance echoing through its towns and villages. The people of Waylan continue to resist the Crown’s rule in whatever ways they can, holding on to their identity and their hope for a future free from oppression. The recent razing of Krezko also bodes poorly for what is happening just south of that ill-fated village.
