King Belgarion
Overview:
King Belgarion, a young and controversial ruler, ascended to the throne of Chernaya three years ago under mysterious and violent circumstances. Claiming to be immortal, Belgarion asserts that his reign will last a thousand years. His rule has already diverged sharply from the traditions of the past 250 years, marked by paranoia, cruelty, and a break from his father’s legacy.
Background and Ascension:
- Name and Surname: Born as Vasily, Belgarion abandoned his father’s surname, adopting the name "Belgarion" based on a prophetic dream from his childhood. He sterilized himself to prevent any offspring from "stealing" his name, emphasizing his belief in his own immortality.
- Ascension: It is rumored that Belgarion used his Inquisitors, a cult of fanatical and ruthless enforcers, to execute his father, securing his uncontested rise to power. His coronation and subsequent actions have set the tone for a reign characterized by fear and control.
- Inquisitors and Paranoia: King Belgarion is closely guarded by his Inquisitors, who are the only ones allowed in his presence within his Sevgorod tower. He rarely leaves the tower, yet his influence is felt throughout the kingdom, with spies reportedly everywhere. His decisions are often erratic and draconian, instilling fear across Chernaya.
- Public Perception: Belgarion is seen as a cruel and unpredictable ruler, and he has done little to diminish that reputation. Stories of his "strange predilections" and his harsh treatment of any perceived threats, especially related to witchcraft, have become widespread. His recent appointment of a popular general to oversee the reconstruction of Skalliheim has only added to the confusion and concern surrounding his rule.
