Nereid
Ladies of the Seas
Of the three most documented Nymph, the nereids may be the least understood and encountered. They are mostly known to sailors. More specifically sailors who have been shipwrecked. These nymphs are known to rescue sailors from storms and other catastrophes at sea. Story after story throughout history tell of sailors sinking below the dark waves, their life fading, only to wake in a beach with faint memories of a beautiful woman looking after them while they recover. These are the nereid. Lakortha poetry claims them the embodiment of everything lovely and gentle about the sea.
Nearly every confirmed tale of these ladies of the sea place them in the Capedian Sea. Most scholars consider this their primary location. However, there are legends in a few other locations. A Nopeli legend claims nereids aided in founding the city of New Open. A more outlandish legend speak of a nereid city, made of red coral and gold, lays deep under the Pryde Waters. Though no records of modern contact have been confirmed, nereids aiding heroes in Tobia's Gulf are common in the stories from the Heroic Era. The few surviving myths of Elder Tree Sessileg have the nereid being born when the tree's sap dripped into the sea.
Nereid may be encountered by sailors, but they rarely speak or remain with them long. Most never see them at all, only having slight recollections of a woman that saved them from drowning. On occasion this nymph choice one of these rescued people, for reason only they understand, to become a Fathomless Patron Warlock.
Nereid are said to have a similar appearance to their cousins the Naiad, with pale blue hair and bluish skin, though the nereid will often have a pink or purple tint to them. They were little in the form of garments. The few records of their appearance claim the sea solidifies on their skin to protect the nymph's modesty. Their voice is described as if the soft lapping of waves were made into a song.
