Fathomless Patron

the Contract with the Deep

A fathomless Warlock is often someone that went down in a sinking ship, only to find themselves washed up on a beach somewhere, saved by a beautiful woman. These women are 'ladies of the seas', the Nereid. Most come away from these encounters with only vague memories of being pulled from the depths and nursed back to health by one of these Nymph. A rare few find the nereid waiting for them once they recover. They offer their Magic and their patronage. The nereid's reason for choosing some over others is their own and never shared. Nor do they often share their desire for having these warlocks in service, rarely asking tasks of them. Many believe the nereid only seek contact with the mortal world above her waves, giving a drop of her power to those she deems worthy of her.

As one can expect fathomless warlocks were traditionally encountered along the coastal lands of the oceans and seas. This was almost exclusively around the Capedian Sea and Pryde Waters, where they served as local leaders, wisemen, and priests. A practice that has become taboo and nearly vanished with the spread of the Trijan faith. Today most fathomless serve onboard ships, traveling and keeping out of sight of a growing religious zeal. They usually serve as senior staff and are seen as the ships good luck. 'A ship with a fathomless is unsinkable', as the saying goes.

The warlock will only every encounter their nereid in person when they travel to her at her request. This always in or around her home sea, be it Pryde Waters, Capedian, or other seas around these seas. While a thread of power connects the nereid to her warlock, and she will be aware of what is happening at any given time. She can only communicate indirectly, usually sharing emotional pings, or visiting in dreams. The Nereids employ water elementals to make contract directly. These elementals in essence become the nereid's Avatar temporarily.
