Black Obelisk
Black Obelisk
The Black Rock Inn was given its name because of a massive black obelisk that protrudes from the earth behind the building. It is well known for its exquisite meals combining assorted baked delicacies with portions of barbecued pork, served with a mug of spicy beer or a goblet of fine wine.   The owners of the establishment are the orcs Strawberry and her brother Singh. The siblings moved to Bridgeport about 8 years ago, but decided to set up their tavern in an abandoned building along the road that connects Bridgeport and Holinda. Each morning they travel with their donkey and a cart to Bridgeport, returning with an abundance of groceries they need for the day.   During the day, a large number of individuals come into the tavern. At midday, travellers arriving by ship at Holinda with a destination in Bridgeport, as well as regulars from Bridgeport, begin to flood in to enjoy the delectable meals that have been prepared for them all morning. At dusk, the tavern serves its last supper, and it closes doors a short time later. Their giant dog Brutus ensures that there is no thievery going on during the night hours.

Noteworthy Patrons

Grandolph Grieck and Plektrum Rockbreaker

Grandolph Grieck by Dean Spencer
Plektrum Rockbreaker by Dean Spencer
A huge table will be provided for Grandolph Grieck and Plektrum Rockbreaker when they come to the bar once a month, as they are regulars there. They will sit at their table from lunch until evening, with a number of individuals coming and going, dropping stuff, getting items, and having a little conversation with the two of them. If they are approached by a random person, they will explain that they are collectors of art and rare plants and that today is the day for new acquisitions.

Jamond

Jamond
When not working on sculptures, Jamond is sitting in the tavern, writing poems or learning his passages for a play at the Opera House. With a bit of luck, visitors can enjoy him reciting a line or two. Jamond is appreciating the sweet treats available in the tavern, and Strawberry is providing him with inspiration for his poetry.

Baltha and Thessaly Cadenza

Baltha Cadenza
Once a week, Baltha Cadenza and his wife Thessaly are visiting the Black Rock Tavern. The location serves as a retreat for them after a long day's work and from the steady stream of individuals who come to them with a variety of requests. They would like not to be talked to while dining at the tavern, and anyone who attempts to do so will be asked to leave them alone and talk to them another day when they are back in the city.

Donero Chuanche

Visiting the tavern increases your chances of running into the bard Donero Chuanche. In exchange for bread and ale, he frequently entertains the visitors with songs or bizarre stories that he makes up on the spot. In addition, he makes sexual overtures toward Strawberry when Singh is not looking, but she politely rejects his advances.

Bulletin Board

A bulletin board is located at the entrance, where visitors may post tiny notices with their demands on them to be shown:
What's your kink?
-- House of Pain
Need help removing boars devastating my crops.
-- Luigi Bernini
I was here! xxx
Paying well for antique pipes
-- Barnabas Flurry
If you find a rattling small machine on legs walking towards you, don't touch it, contact us immediately.
-- Gnome Workshop

-- Crooked House

Oooh, I love the combination of Mombo and Dungeon Alchemist, they go along surprisingly well. Nice place, by the way, and I like that Warehouse III plothook. Also, oh my, the siblings are both real cute. o,o

Thank you. More commissioned art incoming for other stuff soon. :D And yes, The images generated by Wombo look amazing.

I love it! I particularly love the isometric/3D rendering of the tavern interior! (What did you use to make that?). I also think the "plot hooks" section would be particularly helpful for any GM that may someday find themselves using your world. Great work!

I used Dungeon Alchemist, it's getting released end of this month. :)

I'm going to have to look into that!

Nice one Tillerz, but why would they not live in the tavern themselves? Looks like a neat little place on a nice location?

Mar 24, 2022 17:23 by Tillerz

You are totally right. I fixed that. Also added some stairs to the upper for at the the back of the tavern.

Mar 24, 2022 13:03 by Colonel 101

I just think of Brutus literally having one of his eyes on top of the tavern at night, haha.

Mar 29, 2022 11:26 by Tillerz

I rephrased that now. Also barking at things is Brutus' full time job. :)

What a lovely article! It's like an ornate jewel and a puzzle box. I love how everything feels so interlocked. Great job as always!

I've have Gnomes, as well as Halflings & one Black Elf. But you generally don't want to meet mine.

haha, oh dear.

This is a GORGEOUS article but two things I loved especially are the noteworthy patrons and the bulletin board notices (one of those instances where I wish I would have thought of that myself)!

Mar 29, 2022 11:25 by Tillerz

More patrons coming at some point. And I thought about making the bulletin board a random thing... a list of entries that might change every now and then. Need to figure out how to do that.

Mar 24, 2022 21:00

Great article as always Tillerz. As usual the layout is perfect, pictures, images, maps, etc all fantastic. A good read all round. I also liked the notice board, a nice little added extra. A well deserved Like/Fave from me.   Aemon

Thanks so much!

What a great article, I love it!!! Someday I hope to learn how to make the page layout look so good...

Mar 29, 2022 11:23 by Tillerz

Thanks! And well, the css is glowing slowly but steadily.

Mar 24, 2022 23:08 by Laurabones

Those little bulletin board bits, really gave me a chuckle. Nice work tillerz, and beautiful as usual

If it ain't silly, it ain't from Tillerz. :-P

This is wonderful! I love the layout and the art is awesome ... right down to the ticket!

Thank you. :)

Another article that shows that you don't always need a lot of words. A really great RP location with nice plot hooks. The map is great and few should run away from the two orcs. What I also find great is that you actually added a classic bulletin board. I just hope the machine is out of the river soon.

Mar 29, 2022 11:21 by Tillerz

I tried to use more words, but I just got out of ideas. I'll add that later... the black obelisk and the secret room on the upper floor need some explanation.

Mar 28, 2022 14:09 by Emily Armstrong

Such a lovely article! Absolutely adore the photos and the bulletin board is such a neat feature! Although I really enjoyed all the plot hooks, that "Tastes Like Blood" one had me giggling, it would be so fun! Kudos!

Thank you. I tried to connect some of the NPCs of the nearby city to this tavern.

Mar 29, 2022 08:20

Your layout is ridiculous! How do you do it!?

Mar 29, 2022 11:19 by Tillerz

Uh, nothing special? Just a little bit of left and right for the img bbcode tags and a little bit of css?

Mar 29, 2022 12:58 by A

So I like this tavern. Seems cosy and definitively have the tavern vibe to it. The bulletin board is quite fun and a good addition to the article. The plot hooks as the other times I have read your articles are great and well-thought-out. These are really good GM/DM materials you write for us! The only thing I would be thinking of at this moment is that I lack a bit of information about the two owners, even though they are here in the text and I got a general idea of who they are and what they do. Probably something that will come to it later as I believe everything that is here is what is needed for now! Thanks for another good article! Found a small typing error in the last plot hook, storey is probably supposed to be story, and should it not be "masking the flavour in the food"? A small question to end upon, what are you using for the overland map? Do you draw it yourself or is it a mapping software?

More about the owners soon in their own character articles. I started the tavern really late and didnt get everything finished that I wanted to (owners, secrets, obelisk...) And what do you mean by overland map, the one in the sidebar? It's a snippet of my worldmap and then heavily edited. The world map creation process is here: https://www.cartographersguild.com/showthread.php?t=44923 ... it basically using lots of filters in Photoshop (first, until I switched to Affinity Photo) and adding assets and some bits made FilterForge plugin. This is the full region map: Bridgeport County.

That is an impressive map! Thanks for the additional reading on the map.

Great work here, especially on the art and maps. And how can you go wrong with an orc named Strawberry?!

Thank you! :)
