The Betrayer is the reason why Siarvaldans do not bury their dead. He is the reason why the common people hesitate to approach any cave, and consider anything that accidentally falls down a well to be forever lost. And he is the reason that people scrutinize any unusual behavior of their loved ones closely, in fear that they may have been seduced by the Betrayer's words.   The creator of the Fog, the Betrayer is the foremost antagonist of the Siarvaldan pantheon. Many are the tales, paraboles, and myths that relate to his defeat at the hands of the other gods. For he is always beaten by goodness and law in the end, forced to retreat back to his lair of darkness, deep under the crust of Siarvald. But one must be careful, for the Betrayer is never far, and his words are full of treachery and spite.   The modus operandi of the Betrayer is well detailed in Siarvaldan religion. First, the Betrayer looks for people who are not satisfied with their lot in life, for whatever reason that might be. Then, the Betrayer sends his agents (sometimes himself disguised as a regular human) to whisper words of reassurance to that person. Once his victim is befriended, his agents bring them to the fold, dragging them underground, never to be seen again - except as yet another vile pawn of the Betrayer.   Worship of the Betrayer is illegal in the Kingdom of Vah'kan. Thus, those who seek to establish a cult to him do so underground, where the common people of Siarvald dare not dwell. There they are free to plot their dark machinations, which often lay undetected for many years.   Very few can boast of having seen the Betrayer, but those who have report him as an extremely tall man, his head shrouded in a pure void of darkness, only his hands and arms visible to the eye. They also say that his palms are covered by a thousand daggers, dripping with deadly poison.

Holidays

There are no holy days associated with the Betrayer. How can something "holy" be granted to someone so unholy as him?

Common rituals and gestures

The worshippers of the Betrayer know better than to make their presence obvious, so their signs are many, and often change. These signs can be special hand gestures, specific words stringed together in a seemingly unrelated sentence, or even something as innocuous as a way to look at someone.   On a darker note, the most commonly known ritual amongst worshippers of the Betrayer is ritual sacrifice, an act meant to honor their dark god. It involves a dagger, poison, and a good knowledge of anatomy. The least said about this dark ritual, the better.

Divine Intercessions

The Betrayer's blessings are only granted to his most devout, and allow them free passage amidst the underground, as well as the ability to coat any weapon in vile poison. Some say that the most devout amongst his worshippers also gain the ability to call the Fog at will, but this remains unproven to this day.   His curses are as varied as a poisoner's vials. They mostly involve the "poisoning" of something; be that the mind, the body, or even the soul, spiritually corrupting those who are the victim of his ire.

Aphorisms

The aphorisms associated with the Betrayer often change, to keep law enforcement guessing. Presented here are a few which were noted to pop up more often, even if worded slightly differently each time.   I'm going back to my cave: Though normally meant as a joke, amidst worshippers of the Betrayer, this indicates that they are returning to their base.   Watch your back: Though seemingly innocuous when said in earnest, worshippers of the Betrayer always mean these words as a threat.
