Introduction to the Aj'kar setting

A king sits upon his throne. He is surrounded, yet alone. The people cry out for change, but will the king listen, especially when enemies lurk in the fog?   A disease spreads amongst those who are hungry and desperate. Their allies have abandoned them, and a brave warrior rises to save his own people.   An island sits in the middle of the blue expanse of the ocean. Though it is alone, a thriving metropolis lives and breathes atop it, powerless witnesses to the mounting tensions. It remembers the accords of old, and thus it watches in silence as the world descends into chaos.   Though the odds are against you, you have the power to change the world. All it will take is but a single dream.

Welcome to Aj'kar!

Hello, and thank you for checking my setting out! This page serves as a quick way to get introduced to the setting of Aj'kar.

What is Aj'kar?

Aj'kar (pronounced "aj-car") is a high fantasy setting. It was designed to be played using a TTRPG rules system such as Dungeons and Dragons. It was also designed to limit the amount of information required for a potential player to understand the setting, yet have enough depth to keep players engaged - low floor, high ceiling.

Who are the main factions / forces of the setting?

  • The green continent of Siarvald, which is ruled by the Kingdom of Vah'kan, led by King Vah'dis the Undying.
  • The underground continent of Yasamaq. Although it has no form of central government, the clans there live together in harmony - and, in recent times, a man known as Dusmas has begun to rise up and unite his fellows.
  • The metropolis of Qarah's Dream, the neutral ground for the other continents to meet on. Although tensions are rising, the Dreamers keep a positive outlook - after all, this city was founded on a Dream, and even war could not possibly shatter it entirely. Right?

What is happening in Aj'kar?

The people of Siarvald find themselves at odds with King Vah'dis for the first time in centuries. Angered by his lack of social progress and unwillingness to make lasting changes in the Kingdom, the people are beginning to express their anger overtly - and some of the King's Descendants are all too happy to jump on the occasion, some for nobler reasons than others.   On top of this, a mysterious disease, known as Puvecos, spreads in Yasamaq, and the people there find that, in their direst hours, their Siarvaldan allies are not sending over the supplies they should, too preoccupied with their own mounting tensions. Enraged by this, an important man known as Dusmas looks to unite the other clans of the continent to rise up against the Undying King and demand their dues.   To top it all off, monsters are becoming more aggressive, and both the Betrayer's Fog and the lightning storms known as Ökenhadari are growing more frequent, and nobody knows why.   This is where the situation stands at the beginning - mounting tensions, aggressive monsters, and an overall feeling of anger is beginning to sweep over the world.
