Valewyr, the Sun-Kissed Empire

The Valewyrian Empire stands as the most heavily populated, and notably the largest, nation state by sheer landmass. encompassing well over two million square kilometers. However it would be remiss to state this as if to suggest the reasons for some of their past behavior were merely tied up in raw greed. The Valeyri Shelf is a harsh region for logistics, between the constant jutting crests, cliffs and crags, and the thick overgrown mist and cloud forests that propagate within the valleys between. Though mostly contained now to but the worst and most overgrown regions, the Nathaione were and always have been a foil, a thorn in the side, a wrench in the works to the ever growing needs of the Valewyrians. Add to this the more well adapted Ungals whom call much of the misted valleys and lower crags their home, one can perhaps see why this nation developed into such a militant culture.

This is not to say that the land of the Valeyri Shelf is inhospitable. Far from it. Those of Valewyr have done marvelous work, truly inspired, creating entire systems of infrastructure, forging entire strongholds and communities all throughout the shelf, learning to work the environment to their advantage in terms of agriculture and food production as well as roads and rail systems over the decades and last century or more. It is a fascinating land, and with a unique and interesting culture and history, and thus in my small part I am quite excited to introduce you, dear reader, and provide you a basis from which my companions, particularly Rafiq, may offer you a deeper understanding of the people, culture, politics and beliefs at play within this empire. Now read on, and allow me to introduce you to the nation of Valewyr.

Structure

The nation of Valewyr is the truest of religious monarchies, however in a unique way, some ancient working of divine and arcane magick, insuring the church does not ever actual become the ruler of the state. The Empress of Valewyr seems to be something of a true and honest reincarnation. To understand this properly, one would need to understand the mythology of the Phoenix Goddess, that is Vosana Falconhand herself, and the ties to the crown and the throne of the nation as well as the city of Valewood itself. However in short, when each empress has died, regardless if they are at the throne or not when it happens, the throne and crown have always ignited, as her body has burned to ash, the ashes swept away in a sudden fury of smoke, flame and light.

The throne of the nation supposedly will continue to burn brightly, the flame not all consuming, but unable to be put out. The crown as well. In these times, leadership will fall to the closest advisors of the Empress until the next Empress shows herself. And show herself she will, and it is always a woman. Only twice out of elven empresses has it not been a Skye Elf. She will be drawn, regardless of age, regardless of distance, to pilgrimage as if by magick. She will always be Valewyrian and the flames, the divine sunfire consuming the throne and crown, they will not burn her, they will embrace her as kindred, and bestow the marks of the phoenix upon her. The crown will bestow the wisdom of queens, so the stories say, the passed down history and knowledge from her predecessors to bolster her own understanding and prepare her for the difficulties of being the head of state, and final authority of such a vast empire, as well as the commander in chief of her armed forces. It is unknown what exactly decides if a female child is phoenix marked or the depths of this divine enchantment upon the empire and its citizens. It is known to be connected to the oath of fealty that all citizens must swear in blood, flame and voice when they become citizens of the empire. For the empire did not always control all the various provinces and groups of the Valeyri Shelf, yet up to this point there has been an Empress from each at least once. The eleventh and current is actually the great grand-daughter of the first Empress in fact, a unique full cycle moment that some wonder if the magick will continue to function after her end.

Beyond this, as any true empire, there are advisors, trusted counsel to the monarch, as well as provincial governors and the power structures and bureaucracy one would expect with such a vast holding of territory and such a vast population. I would again point to the works of my fellows for further details both in aspects to the mythology as well as the political and cultural aspects of this if you wish to understand those with greater depth.

Culture

The Sun plays an important role in Valewyrian culture, so much so that though much of the traveling overland will require moving through the mist filled valleys and following heavily patrolled roads or traveling robust rail systems, most settlements, and particularly those of larger size, will be built at some altitude, to be closer to the sun. Sky travel also sees its heaviest use here, though pilots working any of Valeyri regularly must be highly skilled and confident. Every city of notable size, not even just the capital or Stronghold Cities, has a Sky-Port. Of all industrialization and this age of modernizing, it is Aeronautics the people and academia of Valewyr have embraced the most, both for the practical applications and because to travel the skies as a Pegasi, the most holy animal, and be so close to the sun itself is such a cultural boon. The idea of proximity to the purity of the sun's gaze being so close to all, so accessible to the people, lined up and lines up exceedingly well with Valewyrian cultural values.

History

To discuss the land of Valewyr's history one must discuss the people and the culture in a depth beyond even what I did when discussing their north-western neighbors. As such I shall leave this to those more qualified than me, humbly so.

Demography and Population

Valewyr's populaton is actually perhaps the most accurately measured of any nation, given the sheer effort they put forth keeping track. It falls into the responsibilities of their robust military to run a census every three years. Given that military service is a legal requirement of all for the first two years they reach adulthood. However they count this at a bit older than most nations, specifically because of the requirement for mandatory military service. Since I have used the lowest common denominator by life expectancy thus far, we will continue to do so. Humans in Valewyr are not counted as adults for the census until the age of 16, unlike 14 in most every other nation. Beyond this Valewyr actually is another nation with a proper count of not just their Forgeborn, but recognizing others not directly under the umbrella of 'Ascended Children' as citizens in their Census, whereas most nations do not even yet list an 'Other' category because the numbers are small enough to be statistically insignifcant.

Due to the large population of Valewyr, the Ursiya, as well as the Goki, Temura, and Elemu all are individually recognized, though they make up such small portions of the populace by percentage, because numerically they are still significant. With a population at last count but a year before my visit, the year 1528, of of 9.03 million, one can understand how even small percentages could be numerically significant enough that an empire would wish to keep track. Interestingly unlike most nations however, they do not differentiate between the humans, grouping them all together, but do still differentiate between Skye Elves and Woad Elves.

Ancestry Percentage of Population Numerical Count
Dwarves 6.3% 567169
Humans 16.8% 1512544
Gnomes 8.2% 738226
Halfmen 9.3% 837239
Skye Elves (Includes Mixed Elves) 28.4% 2556872
Woad Elves 11.5% 1035345
Tantur 9% 810270
Forgeborn 2.7% 243081
Ursiya 1.4% 126042
Goki 1.6% 144048
Temura 1.3% 117039
Elemu 3.5% 315125

What is important to realize about Valewyr of course is that there is inherent racial prejudice in its societal structure as well, which my colleague Rafiq can better discuss. Mostly it has to do with political appointments in the civil sector, less so in other spheres, and most certainly not in the Valewyrian military, there all that matters is deeds.

Currency
The Valewyrian Crown, despite Valewyr's power and prestige militarily speaking, is actually arguably one of the weaker currencies on Valerick right now, trading at a rate, at time of publishing, of 1.19 Crowns to make 1 Chailling. Valewyr's currency is broken into three stages, but they are also a unique bunch, where most nations have gone with some sort of system of tens for their currency, confusingly despite writing their values in the same style, Valewyr only uses ten as the base for their first transition and then uses eight for their second. Crowns are of course the highest end, what used to be gold coins and are now represented through special stamped notes more commonly. Below that you have Jewels, the silver coins, which eight of them make a Crown. Then at the bottom you have Pennies, the brass, and what used to be copper coins. Ten of these make a Jewel. Though it is a subtle difference, it does mean when translating between the Crown and other currencies, or vice versa, one does have to remember the oddity of the rule of eight between Jewels and Crowns.

They have the standard array of notes and coins, though unlike most nations it is indeed a mixture. They have one and two crown coins, followed by five, ten, twenty and fifty Crown notes. As to the coinage for Jewels, there is naturally a gem, which is 1 Jewel. Then you have twinned, a 2 Jewel coin and that's it. As to pennies, these have one, two, and five penny coins, so once again, another unique factor to Valewyrian currency where the coins don't represent a percentage of the next denomination up the list but instead concrete amounts.
Major Exports
Though they export excess rice and other crops, as well as timber, stone and a host of minerals, the single most notable export by value and importance, is of course Manna Gems and associated byproducts. The Valeyri Shelf is a region, comparatively, chock full of manna gem deposits, with no less than eight being actively mined at any given time in the nation's history. Like all deposits they are limited in size, hard to find, yet they seem to be everywhere within the Shelf. This is a massive resource and wealth driver for the nation's economy, one that cannot be understated, even with how much they keep for domestic (and military) use.
Major Imports
Despite the success of Terrace Farming, and it is a massively successful process and method, one of Valewyr's largest imports is of course produce, specifically corns, barleys and other feed/bulk crops for both animal feed and for bread making, from their neighbor Rohara. It is this percieved 'dependence' that has made the Breadbasket of Valerick their cultural target of priority in the idea of 'One under the Sun' unity doctrine and is why they have had a notable number of small conflicts and even more than once, full scale wars, with Rohara as a nation.

Other major imports include;

  • Smokepowder and Smokepowder Weapons

  • Ghel and other oils and lubricants

  • Coal

Public Agenda

Valewyr has a unique belief and one that culturally has led to...shall we say conflict and disagreements. A notable part of the Valewyrian mythos culturally is tied to the idea that the Sundering, the darkness that near consumed the world, will one day return. There is a deep cultural belief both within the religion of Falconhand, and within the nation itself, that they are the chosen people, the Sun-Kissed, meant to lead, guide, protect and organize everyone in preparation for this event. The church, interestingly enough, expresses this belief less radically than the nation-state often has, using missionaries, funding education, training its templars and encouraging them to wander far and wide, even beyond the nation's borders, to join and lead the fight against the 'Great Darkness' wherever they may find them. Truly the wisdom of a Sky-Rider is often a boon to where ever they choose to be, especially in times of crisis, and their leadership is oft a boon in times of dire need.

The nation-state however has more than once taken this belief a step further. Valewyr has the heaviest history of any modern nation on Valerick for full on conflict and open war with any of its neighbors. They've made war with Rohara at least twice with conquest in mind, and have had notable border skirmishes and disagreements within the area of the Cocan Peninsula with Susma as well.

Assets

Valewyr is a rich land, heavy in minerals and timber, however also steeped in magick. More manna gem deposits of all kinds have been stumbled upon in mining the Valewyr Shelf than any other region of the world. As one might imagine this has helped continue to keep the nation of Valewyr exceedingly wealhty given the value of such materials and their scarcity overall. It has also proven a valuable military resource, seeing her military forces generally better equipped than most, with all but the most low end of the troops and footmen by rank having at least a smidge of magick enhancement about their gear, some small bit of enchantment that is standard issue for troops of that rank and specialty.

Territories

Valewyr occupied territory is part of the success of the size and scope of this empire. After the Sundering the Valeyri Shelf was actually home to a bunch of what would seem to be micro states, the provinces of the empire today. The Skye Elves however, unified in the Valen, the core province, quickly and soon, following the doctrine and beliefs of their hero goddess, the Ascended Champion of Valewyr, Vosana Falconhand, would go about the unification wars, a series of rapid, skillful conquests bringing every region of the Shelf under their control. A not insignificant part of this was of course the Sky-Riders themselves. Having pegasi and such skilled aerial combatants gave the Valen a huge advantage in this terrain, as one might imagine. Within a little more than two centuries the Valewyr Empire was fully established, less than one elven lifetime. Though in the early going there were revolts, the notable moments of civil unrest, surprisingly enough the monarchy system, in its unique choosing methods, seemingly divinely inspired, has stood the test of all that. Empresses have been pulled from their seat and usurped with violence, there have even been two civil wars. Yet the empire remains an empire, its governmental system never changed, merely inadequate or unreasonable leadership removed, violently if required.

The Valeyri Shelf and its sheer geography cannot be ignored when speaking of the territory, but also of Valewyr's assets and military defenses. This terrain naturally forces any force wishing to engage in combat within the Empire's borders into predictable, easily controlled routes. The sheer vicious topography is her greatest asset and defense.

Religious Backdrop

As with all nations, the worship of any of the Ascended is more than welcome, however Vosana Falconhand is naturally, by a large margin, the preferred diety, and the worship of the Goddess of Wisdom, Tactics and the Sun is in fact a recognized state religion.

Agriculture and Industry

The people of Valewyr have made excellent use of their terrain. One would expect no real form of agriculture to be able to be successful at a large scale yet you would be incorrect. Terrace farming was in fact invented here, the method and logistics the work of a society whom needed it, and so they simply built it. No one person is credited with the discovery, it is more a cultural achievement, a great works project that bore impressive results.

Valewyr is no industrial superpower but they have not resisted this modernization either, embracing the early machining technologies with open arms. Technologies and processes in every craft and industry have been willingly accepted and imported, after all, it would go against the very premise of their culture to hold out against such things. Wise leaders listen to the brilliance of those they lead, and give proper credit where credit is deserved. This is a uniquely strange aspect to the imperialistic bent of Valewyr as an institution, and not what one would normally expect given what written histories and records exist from the Sundering and those few and far between bits of records ever discovered from before it.

Trade and Transport

With this new modernization era and industrialization, the arrival of technologies such as locomotion and aeronautics, Valewyr defied what one would expect of empires as a whole. They did not resist, they embraced. They brought in the minds, skilled hands and welcomed with open arms this new age. Locomotion is less robust here, the geography dictating as such of course, yet they have a notably robust rail network given those noted challenges. Far more impressive is their embracing of aeronautics. Every city, every settlement with a population of note beyond a few thousand, has an active Sky-Port. Naturally the larger cities see far more traffic than others, but no Sky-Port in the country sees any less than at least two or three craft arriving and taking off daily. They are used to transport goods and people at a massive scale within the nation, not surprising given the geography.

Education

Valewyr has the most robust and notable public schooling system of perhaps any nation on Valerick. It is mandatory for children to receive education going to school four days a week for ten hours a day and it falls unto the faithful of Vosana Falconhand to provide it. Every temple, every church and chapel is also a school, regardless of the size. Every child, sometime before becoming a legal adult, must be enrolled for ten years of schooling, and these must be done consecutively. Parents of longer lived ancestries can of course more readily dictate and decide exactly when to put their children through this system, with humans, who have been our baseline for this comparison, it is common to start this process at five years of age, to allow for at least one repeat in case of an illness or failing final examinations of a given year and having to repeat it.

Love Sky-ports, interesting idea of transportation with rails.

The breakdown of population is insane to think about implementing lol. Each of those ethnicities could probably be their own articles.

Oh absolutely and they will 'eventually' and I will need to go back and add articles and eventually come back to all of these and add links to those tables on my nation articles :)

I bet they've barely finished taking the census before they have to do it again. XD   I love the idea of the ruler being a reincarnation. Has there ever been anyone called to the throne who doesn't want to accept it?
