Magnolia Town
Magnolia Town is one of the permanant settlements in Eskern East, particuarly known for its magnolia mangroves and off-season location of Jellow King.
What's the name of your settlement? Why is it called that?
- Magnolia Town is named for the naturally surroundings of Magnolia trees, which grow much larger due to the fact more grow in the decaying trunks and dead trees, creating a "Tree of Life" type growth which resembles Yew.
How big is this settlement?
- The Wyvias have a permanant population of ~1,500 but operate as industries, which often shocks foreigners
- Unlike the towns in Eskern South, where the Sanguine Bromeliade provides groundcover for a whole additional society, Magnolia is not hospitable at all and only a select few want to stay there long term
What’s the purpose of this settlement?
- Starting point for Eskern Cycle (Team Magnolia)
- Place of Worship for local deities like Gaap-Tenodera and Alloces-Volana
- Place of Scientific Interest
- Home base of Hroland and Jellow King
- Major supplier of Gelatin, Bogstone, and some Brine materials
What's the surrounding geography like?
- Phelgmatic Peatland which merges into a Sanguine Bromeliade West, and becomes a Sanguine Strand at the coast
- The Northernmost Village, it is also the highest above sea level and rests on a promontory at the edge of a peninsula which curves Eastward into Weird Lake
- It is surrounded by peat bog lowlands and fenlands, causeways, with some tidal influence as there are some small runoff rivers during rainy season which empty into the Eastern Ocean
What's the tone or vibe here?
- It doesn't necessarily feel like it's part of the forest due to the higher ground and boglike surroundings
- The Wyva instead of on giant horsehail towers, are built into the promontory rock outcropping, and is accessible only by stairs (both up and down)
- Magnolia Town is beautiful but also feels deadly and somber, many of the people here have suffered from illness or injury harvesting these precious ingredients
- A beautiful, somewhat erudite culinary gem that hides the industrial-level work that has begun since the Heno Empire annexed Eskern
- A peaceful village forced to become a bustling market town, despite the low population (it is incredibly difficult to buy land here as a foreigner)
- Have their own laws and justice, though it's expected to follow local and federal laws. The enforcers are hired and promoted by the village and are seen somewhat like druids - elders, law-speakers, and teachers.
- This place is one of the exposed places during Indifferent Suns
What does “a roof and a meal” look like here?
- There are four Wyva built into the Magnolia Promontory - Wyva A, E, I, and K
- Wyva A, E, and K are for industry/working purposes and also house temp workers they import for seasonal work
- Wyva I is the only one made public to visitors, and is where Team Magnolia is housed, though they have a floor and penthouse-level accomadations dedicated for them as well as a light rail which is only accessible from the Wyva, and leads to a stop by the stairs down.
- The marina below allows people to travel relatively safely around the different islands and is also used for shipping, with Lithomancy and a system of pulleys to lift it to the Wyvae and down.
- Food is almost the best you can get - they have real auroch milk, alongside several plant-based milks such as orache, magnolia bark, and pickled medlar milk, which is more custardy
- The best (and most gruesomely-harvested) gelatin on the whole Island let alone in Eskern, and the home of the legendary restaurant Jellow King
- Magnolia fruits, the only place to get them where they're actually edible
- You can get really good food for cheap here
- The village itself looks like a farmer's market with some temporary dwellings that get destroyed and made into fallow every nine years
- Wyva I has a gym, sparring area, pool, communal hall, and church, as well as an amusement park that the villagers were against having built
