Session 5: Beneath The Shadowed Oak Inn Report

General Summary

Upon regrouping outside of Hilda Thornberry house, the adventures looked at what was given to them. A pouch of dust that could summon spirits and some potions to detect magic.   Mozdemir  concluded that there might not be enough dust for numerous attempts but they all remembered that they need to invoke strong emotions bound to a place where the spirit is connected. After a small conversation that Thoran Grimwood might trigger this emotion from the spirit of Lyria Duskbane . The party decided to explore the place Thoran mentioned before bringing him along.   Upon entering The Shadowed Oak Inn, Mozdemir  let Thoran know they wished to explore what Lyria Duskbane had kept secret and Thoran had guarded all these years and that they would be summoning her ghost.    After convincing him that the spirit would not be able to harm anyone, Thoran Grimwood let them to his room. Where under a small table and rug was a trapdoor. Bound by three magical glyphs.    At first glance Mozdemir  noticed the middle glyph was a rune of fire but couldn't make anything out of it.   Upon investigation Ellyrian Starchaser noticed that the first rune was in Slyvan and slowly swirling words,    "In shadows we move, in light we hide, three truths we seek, to break this tide" - implying three trials   The first trail of wisdom and insight was a riddle... I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with the wind. What am I? - Ellyrian Starchaser guessed it was an Echo and the first glyph solidified and unlocked.    The second trial of intelligence lit up, a rune of fire starting to glow and throb, ticking like a bomb... the magic not passing through it consistently and needing disarmed. Cairn Macdui put his hands on it as magical conduct and drew it together in a religious rune related to fire allowing the magical energy to flow fully through. Disarming it.    The third trial of dexterity lit up, three small dials with glyphs on the dials and a circle of them on the trap door that could align, in future inspection Ellyrian Starchaser noticed some of the glyphs on the trapdoor were deeper. Assuming they were the likely candidates, Mozdemir  turned the first dial.   A timer starter. With the first dial aligned correctly by turning it anticlockwise Mozdemir  aligned the dial, and unlocked it.     Ellyrian Starchaser tried the second and successfully unlocked it. Then the third and failed, causing Mozdemir  to react and throw her out the room while getting hit by a thunderous wave of sound to his back.   When they looked back they realised all of the Glyphs had reset. Ellyrian Starchaser  quickly worked out the first glyph, Cairn Macdui easily disarmed the rune fo firebolt and once again three dials. The first was locked in place, the second quickly aligned and the third... once again would align and then boom. Mozdemir  once again reacting to ensure no one was hurt and the trial was reset.    Only on the third attempt were all successfully unlocked, with the only victim of the failed attempts being one innocent table Mozdemir  taking a beating and now the stench of stale air wafts from under the trap door.
