Hello and welcome!   I'm River and I work in the historic trifecta (archives, museums, and libraries, oh my!), with degrees in History, Creative Writing, and Library & Information Sciences, but worldbuilding and writing are by far some of my greatest passions.   You can often find me writing with my husband, Shiftrex, as we work to build the worlds and gaming systems that we want to write and play in.   Our worlds are those of fantasy, swords and sorcery, and great tragedies and triumphs. Furs shroud her body and soften her steps as she looks out across the tundra near her forest home. This far north, the trees thin and become smaller, the air harsher with its chill. Animals are scarcer, or more adapted to hiding in near nothingness. In the harsh environments of the far north, the Paladins of the Ylyndar Clan serve as the light in near darkness. The Outlanders of the Elven Forest do not stray this far north, the shrouded valley of the Metallics rests over the peak of a mountain that stretches beyond what the eye can see. In a castle standing on the edge of the world, the Ylyndars mean hope and safety.
 
Reinys, at the age of 300, is the youngest of the current generation of Ylyndar Paladins. She is the first female Paladin in the family in centuries, serving under the tutelage of her four older brothers. Her youngest sibling, a boy of mere fifty, had yet to start his training as the next Paladin of the family, leaving her to continue serving her older brothers as not much more than a page.
 
Time passes even more slowly on the edge of the Neither Tundra. With the changing colors of the large trees in the Elven Forest leagues away, the most color that graces their home is the glimpse of a Metallic Dragon as it dares fly over the impossible peaks of the Spine of Kallex. Everything in their sight is frozen and colorless, except the moments that they are graced by the light of the Scales of Kallex.
 
The Outposts on the northern edge of the Elven Forest are protected by Paladins, much like the southern border is protected by Rangers. Things come from the cold desolation of the tundra that require a presence of the divine, that is how the Ylyndars live their life.
 
Because the years wax long and time is at almost a standstill, Reinys serves as a fledgling Paladin after nearly 200 years. Her life is simple, blanketed in an uncanny silence, but soon she will be set on her greatest mission. All Ylyndar Paladins must leave the north once during their lives, Reinys will soon leave on her journey.

Her skin is rather pale as sunlight is sometimes difficult to find on the edge of the Neither Tundra. Her black hair is in stark contrast to her skin, but this is a common feature of her family. Reinys has striking dark blue eyes that stare out from the soft lines of her face. She often wears her hair so that it frames the paleness of her skin and accentuates her eyes.







She favors her right hand in combat, but she has been known to wield her weapon in either hand depending on the situation. With lance in hand, she feels the most confident and rarely wavers in her movements. This confidence does not appear in everything she does, causing her to trip or waver in her movements if she feels unsure of herself.







Reinys is able to utilize the same divine magic that all Paladins have but she can also sometimes harness the innate magic of the Elves. She prefers magic that utilizes ice, cold, or radiance as it is the specialty of her family and the Knights of Yggdrasil. She tends to stay away from magic that utilizes fire, but there is no particular reason behind this.







Reinys prefers the darker colors that those in her order wear, but her armor is much more intricate in design and silver, instead of grey, marking her as one of the leading family. Her armor is fur-lined, stopping some of the cold of the Neither Tundra from seeping in. She sometimes also wears a fur scarf that her mother made for her.







Having been well-trained by her brothers, Reinys can use a variety of weapons but she prefers a lance as it is the signature weapon of her family. She uses common weapons for now as she has not been granted a true ice weapon by her order. After her worldly travels, she hopes to gain one of these special weapons.





Reinys is extremely in shape due to the constant training with her older brothers. Her height makes her slightly taller than the majority of female Elves, but that does not hinder the level of grace that she executes most times. Having very few female role models with physically demanding professions to look towards, Reinys tries very hard to maintain the very muscled physique that her brothers sport.

Education

The education of a Paladin in the far northern reaches is often a family affair. The current head of the clan serves as the head of their order, which may include Paladins from a small area around the castle. The children, mostly males, of those in these Outposts are brought to the castle for rigorous schooling in a variety of subjects, with the main focus being on the duties of the Paladins and the oath they eventually swear to the god Ygg and the Elven Kingdom.
 
Females in these Outposts often choose not to become Paladins and will often become Rangers, other spellcasters, Warriors, Cooks, or other things. Those females in the ruling clan are required to become @pala. Thus, Reinys' training began when she turned 100, becoming the only female in the current school.

Employment

After nearly 150 years of rigorous schooling, as her schooling was given more time and care than the ordinary student, Reinys swore her paladin oath and became a fledgling paladin. In that stead, she has served the last fifty years as an assistant to her older siblings who have trained for centuries. As an assistant, she learns her duties as a paladin of the ruling clan as her older brothers prepare to take her father's place as head of the clan and order.
 
Much of her time is spent training with her brothers as well as continuing her studies. Often when her brothers have nothing for her to do, she spends her time helping her mother.

Morality & Philosophy

Reinys has a very strong sense of morality as her paladin oath demands it. She follows the tenets of her faith to the letter, very rarely straying away from its ideals unless completely necessary. She hopes to never bring shame to her family name and her place as a paladin, so she keeps her ideals close to heart, even when hard times question those ideals.

Motivation

Her greatest motivation is striving to be the same as her brothers. She trains and studies hard because she refuses to fail in her father's eyes, needing to be the paladin that is expected in her clan. She tries to be her own motivation as motivation does not come from her siblings.

Personality Quirks

She tends to rub the symbol of her order that she wears on a chain around her neck when she is nervous. The golden pendant has since worn to the white color of platinum over the ridges of the tree in her decades.

Family Ties

Reinys has a large family and the ties within it are extremely important. Her father, Elduin, is the head of the order and her mother, Naya, is trained as a ranger and seamstress. Her oldest brother, Taeral, serves as her father's aid in the order. Her other older brothers, Vaalyun, Vamir, and Airdan, are those that train Reinys and give her daily duties. She serves as their assistant while also helping her father and Taeral if necessary. Corym is her youngest brother.
 
Within Yllvalion, Reinys has other extended family, mostly siblings of her father, but she rarely interacts with them. Even so, the family knows her and would aid her if needed.

Contradictions of Faith

The deeper into the temple we travel, the more contradictions of faith and those who follow it present themselves. A tiefling paladin finds his resting place here, and it is his symbol that has stymied us throughout the dark city and the temple that we have seen. That in itself is a contradiction, especially with the demons and undead that riddle every step of this somewhat forgotten place. Maybe that has something to do with waning magic, but it is hard to tell as nothing has been simple since we entered this dark world.
 
The paladin had rid the world of many greats, great evils and great beings, but I have yet to understand by what rules and through which god this entity served. A giant crystal that screamed with the voices of thousands of undead souls, the stench of demons and their spawn burning in my nose, a protecting spirit that seemed to be missing from its temple. While the paladin may have been great, his protection seemed to have long since left the temple, so I find little remorse in my actions, although the red mage questions my ideals.
 
We are not here in the Underdark to pick up a mantle of protector or even one of any recognition. We were tasked with a job to complete, but we have strayed outside of that in an effort to find some semblance of safety here in the tunnels. While that is something we must undertake, I refuse to toss aside my morals and my oath, even if the paladins of the Underdark do not believe in the same things. Ygg's influence continues far beyond the surface and I will serve my oath no matter what the others say.
 
Faith is a strange thing in the Underdark, while it is not lacking in any way, it is extremely different. Having survived the temple, I understand why Miz said to send Syndra to Monitrex. While her faith is in Ygg, the same as mine, she is not oath-bound in the same way that I am. She can look upon the culture of the Drow with open eyes instead of ones shaded by the cultures of the surface.

It's hard for me to go about my work knowing so little about what I am sending Syndra into in the coming days. With the store room done, our projects multiplied, but the great dwarf pointed us towards the next great endeavor. With the river rushing through our home, it only made sense to harness that power with a water wheel. Construction began slow, with Tarr and Raiden taking much of the burden upon themselves, but when the new day began and they chose to adventure out, we were left without our top craftsmen on the project. Tarr and Raiden had set the work into motion, allowing for only manual labor. As they adventured to the dark city with Khalsinn, I chose to take to the hard work of the water wheel, stretching my muscles, without the ever present lance in my hand. For once, I worked without my armor, shedding my paladin appearance in favor of the light clothes that Khalsinn often wore. It was an odd difference, but the change seemed to be for the good.
