In the ensuing turmoil, Ashen was taken away by his father, who sought to indoctrinate him into the grim trade of poaching. The separation was sudden and heart-wrenching for Root. He watched helplessly as his best friend was torn from his life, the once vibrant light in Ashen's eyes dimmed by the harsh reality of his father's world.
