Warlocks

Warlocks of Zoetrope

There's always those who take the easy path to power. In this setting, warlocks are morally grey at best, and walk darker paths. Many are hopelessly corrupted, some are merely compromised, and a few somehow manage to walk a razor's edge of ill-gotten magical might while holding on to some shreds of decency or goodness. It's a slippery slope though, for power borrowed is never free.

House Rules

The following changes to the base warlock class are in effect in this setting. Any features not explicitly mentioned remain unaltered. Notably, Mystic Arcanum works differently in our house rules to allow high level warlocks more spellcasting flexibility.
Mystic Arcanum
When you take your 11th level, 13th-level, 15th-level, and 17th-level in this class, your patron bestows upon you a magical secret called a Mystic Arcanum.
Each Mystic Arcanum gives you a spell slot of a spell level as indicated in the Mystic Arcanum table below that you can use to cast a Mystic Arcanum spell or to cast a Pact Magic spell. Additionally, you learn a spell of your choice from any spell list of a level no higher than your highest Mystic Arcanum spell slot, which are warlock spells for you. For example, a warlock taking their 13th level in this class gains a 7th-level spell slot from this feature and learns a spell of their choice of 7th-level or less from any spell list.
You regain all of your expended Mystic Arcanum spell slots after completing a long rest.

Optional Class Features
You gain the Eldritch Versatility optional class feature.

Otherworldly Patrons
None of the official otherworldly patrons are available in this setting. The following custom patrons exist, but may require DM permission for player characters:
The following official otherworldly patrons are not available in this setting by default due to incompatibility with the setting's cosmology, but a DM might be persuaded to allow a reskinned version:
  • Archfey (Player's Handbook)
  • Celestial (Xanathar's Guide to Everything)
  • Fathomless (Tasha's Cauldron of Everything)
  • Fiend (Player's Handbook)
  • Genie (Tasha's Cauldron of Everything)
  • Great Old One (Player's Handbook)
  • Hexblade (Xanathar's Guide to Everything)
  • Undead (Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft)
  • Undying (Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide)

Pact Boons and Eldritch Invocations
The offical Pact Boons are available, as are various additional Pact Boons, each of which offers a selection of exclusive Eldritch Invocations for warlocks who swear to them. Refer to each Pact Boon for such invocations:
  • Pact of the Harvest: some patrons gift their warlocks with druidic insights.
  • Pact of the Perfidious: some Eldritch Invocations are only available to warlocks who rely on deception, skulduggery, and flexible morals to further their goals.
  • Pact of the Primordials: some Eldritch Invocations are only available to warlocks who serve one of a variety of Elemental Princes or the insidious Elder Elemental Eye; and some are even more narrowly restricted by the specific elemental type (Air, Earth, Fire, Water) of the warlock's patron. For instance, an Eldritch Invocation with the prerequisite of Pact of the Primordials [Air] feature can be taken by a warlock whose patron is an Elemental Prince of Air but not by a warlock whose patron is an Elemental Prince of Fire.
  • Pact of the Vengeful: some Eldritch Invocations are only available to warlocks whose patron is The Forgotten.
