Akanni Baasa
Roughly translating to "Three Leaders" in Common, the Akanni Baasa is the governing force of Kalana. Contrary to what the translation would imply, it is actually a governing body of representatives. It was established in 1065 CE in response to the rising internal dissent following The Red's defeat. Prior to this, the people of Kalana were governed by a Stratocracy comprised of the military leaders from each of the great families and their allies. Recognizing that the tools for war were not suitable for a prosperous future of peace, the great families ceeded significant control over the day-to-day operations to the people. They held free and fair elections, urging the families to elect a representative of their interests.
As it currently stands, the Akanni Baasa has 16 total members:
The Speaker rotates every two years, being appointed by the other 15 members to the seat. The role is generally given to an elder in the community, and their responsibilities are mostly limited to keeping the meetings on topic and keeping things civil.
