The Brunelle Home

Historical Overview

Orphans in Anhara

Orphans in Anhara do not have a legally prescribed protection or form of care. However, they do have a number of social protections. When it comes to the afterlife, charity weighs towards the Anharan soul's ascension to the Choir of Mistra. Further, the tenets of Anharan knighthood, and thus of nobles, call for the protection of orphans, the poor, and the vulnerable. While this leaves orphans without state support, orphanages exist across the nation thanks to the charity of the wealthy.

Founding

The Brunelle Home was constructed after the destruction of the city by the Free Company as a refuge for the orphans of civilians and soldiers killed in the siege. The Brunelle family, one of the most prominent in pre-Lyonel Perryden, got permission from their new overlords and poured most of their wealth into the construction of an architectural and charitable wonder. While this was not only a fulfilment of traditional Anharan noblesse oblige, the Brunelles were rumored to be particularly pious followers of Meda.

Longevity

The Brunelle family has not been an active force in the local political or economic scene for centuries. The question of how the Home has stayed funded since the Age of Rule has been a topic of conspiracy and discussion in Perryden for longer than anyone can remember. One would be hard pressed to find a local resident without an opinion on the matter. Regardless, the Home has outlasted rulers, companies, and economic waves without so much as an overgrown lawn.

Architectural Significance

Originally constructed in the fashion of a squat keep, the Home has grown over the centuries. Its largest, and most iconic, expansion was during Perryden's boom in the early 100s of the Age of Men. The ancient stone tower became the entrance hall to a wide, five-story, stone manor. An impressive structure, its turrets having a commanding view over the Spine, naturally drawing eyes from across the neighborhood.
"While passers-by are not welcomed inside, gazing is permitted. The well-informed traveller, as our reader is, would be remiss to not stop and stare a while at this grand structure in a sea of small town architecture." - Merchants' Roadmap of the Vinelands
Its most impressive designs, however, are more difficult to see. Few are welcomed inside, but if they were to be, they would enter an intricately decorated central dining hall. The ceiling therein is bedecked in white stars, on a field of brilliant blue, depicting the Nine Spirits as well as less prominent constellations. The walls and timber supports are precisely carved, spotted with ancient shields depicting the heraldry of dozens of Anharan houses.
