Tags are primarily used for searching and listing articles by tag. They add extra layers of organization to articles beyond their categories. Since my category structure is by location, my tags group articles by other qualities, such as length and topic   Much of this is subject to change as the world grows and I rework how it's organized.

Abbreviations?

I prefer shorter tags, especially if I'm going to use them a lot. Since searching requires at least three characters, most abbreviations are the first three letters of the word I'm abbreviating - like index and length. But not all tags get abbreviations, for a handful of reasons:
  • The full word is more reader-friendly for searching, or is already short enough
  • The natural abbreviation is too short for searching, like sc for Summer Camp
  • The three-letter abbreviation would conflict with another tag, or would be too ambiguous to tell what it means
  • Not abbreviating is either more consistent with related tags or easier to remember
