Tambanokano's Trench
The deepest point in the Talinian Ocean is known as Tambanokano's Trench. This abyss is the lair of Tambanokano, the most voracious of the Celestial Gluttons, a star-eating crab kaiju. Sailors and sea life avoid the waters over it, especially during the full moon when the hungry crab is most likely to stir.
The crab kaiju's been killed and come back more times than I can count. The Moon Goddess took it down in her first hunts, but that overgrown crustacean keeps turning up through the ages. We're pretty sure a new Tambanokano rises every few centuries. The waters over the trench glow with crab eggs about once every hundred years. We catch Crab Cultists smuggling barrels of eggs every few seasons. The powers-that-be are working overtime to make sure no fresh kaiju crabs spawn on the moons or in the oceans.
Tambanokano's Trench lies roughly between the island of Zabar and the Talin Islands in an empty stretch of the Talinian Ocean. The dark waters are known are notoriously lifeless. Natural sea life seems to instinctively avoid the Tambanokano.
Underwater civilizations and aerial surveys agree that the Trench is the deepest place in the ocean, but no expedition has survived a descent to the bottom to confirm it. Even magical probes and scrying eyes go dark in the deepest depths.
A permanent perimeter of Vindicator skyships circle the waters above the trench. These ships are under standing orders to destroy any unauthorized vessels attempting to enter. They seek to prevent the real threat of Crab Cultists harvesting kaiju eggs and seeding them on one of the moons or in another ocean.
When Lola Carly was young, she made the journey from home to here. We had no skyship then, we had to come here by boat. We sailed past the crab's trench during the day when the Tambanokano was sure to be asleep. I could feel the eyes watching us from down below. I could feel the hunger yearning down in the deep. They all said I was crazy, but even then young Carly know a monster when she's near it.
